I guess there are a few reasons why I put up with it. Firstly price. I did look in to MySky but because we have our phone and Internet with Telstra it's cheaper for us to have it all as a package and there was no way my husband would switch to Xtra broadband. Also on the price issue - when we signed up I got a free cellphone with free texts for 2 years and that has saved me a lot. And other than price I really don't want a Sky dish on my house and I don't want to deal with the rain fade issues.

Hi Christine, not wanting to take this far off topic just curious, I know TCL's HFC broadband is probably one of the best out their, but Xtra I dont believe is that far behind, having spent $1.4bn on their DSL network its come a long way such that I dont think the difference is as great as you think anymore.

And Rainfade, since moving to Optus D1 that has higher power output rain fade is now very rare, in my area pole fade of the TCL network has been worse than rain fade on Satellite.

anyway back on topic, I look forward to TCLs response to the recent posts, good one oldfart

Cyril

That's interesting Cyril and I shall pass it on to my husband but he'll be hard to sway.  Also I have to say the hassle of changing my Email address puts me off too.  Changing cell phone numbers was bad enough - no matter how many times you tell people you've changed it you still get someone using the old number.

Hi, number portablity is great, never need to change your number again, sooner you move off an ISP's email to something like gmail the better off you will be for lots of reasons, being tied to an isp is one.

The scene is RWC semi final AB's vs Oz TV3 in HD. AB's on the attack... T-box heavy pixellation, freezing!!!! +++

Yes, we experienced very similar problems - basically missed the last 10 mins (all of the last 5 mins).  No problems until about 10 mins before fulltime, then first pixellation for minute or so, followed by freeze-up.  Power cycled & it came back on for a few seconds, stuttered then froze again.  Two power cycles later we got a further few seconds of pixellated, stuttered viewing before it locked for the duration.  By the end of the second (or third?) power cycling game was all but over.

Too late we woke up & turned on an old analogue TV in the family room, but only in time to see the players walking off the field!

Gosh that would have made me furious.  Thankfully we had no problems with our T-Box last night and even if we had our TV has built in Freeview so a quick change on the remote and we would have been sweet again (we were watching via TV1).

stevesumner: OldFart: I have had my T-Box since August 2010 and in that time have had 2 failed recordings and had to power cycle about 3 times. I think that's not too bad, so on the whole I have been very happy with the device. Latest update has certainly improved responsiveness and made it easier to sort recordings.

I'm delighted that you've had such a good run Steve - if I had been so lucky I would not be such a grumpy SOB.
I accept that a lot of the time the T-box delivers but the fact that I cannot rely on it makes it a terribly frustrating home appliance. Unfortunately we have become used to technology that is not reliable - the vast majority of us put up with Windows and MS Office (in their various incarnations) and periods of calm interspersed with inexplicable problems are pretty common.

With Windows/Office I can (grudgingly) accept the problem - the PC is programmable, there are lots of hardware/software variations and, as a result, incompatibilities are more or less inevitable (I know there are those who will disagree but I don't want to get into that debate). By contrast, the T-box is locked down. Telstra determines the hardware & software so it should be a simple matter of getting those things to work together. But that simplicity seems to evade the engineers at Telstra.

YMMV as they say - I'm glad that you're getting good mileage out of your T-box, spare a thought for those of us less fortunate

My Clearnet email address lived on after I had dumped Clear and moved to Xtra for broadband. to solve the problem of people using that address I simply forwarded it to my (then) current email and never gave it another thought. Unless things have changed it is likely you could simply forward your [Clear/Paradise] address and move on. Of course, as someone else suggested it is probably better to have an email address that does not tie you to an ISP.

Grrr, 6:45pm and BOTH of our T-Boxes were on blue screen. We have had to reboot them both.

Big thanks to Hook Ups Ltd for the Freeview aerial install today. Awesome service. Pana Dual tuner HDD recorder and TV both now have Freeview aerial feed and next time I will be able to change channel and not miss the game!!! Interestingly the T-Box recording of the AB's game has the game times jumping 1-2 minutes forward etc as I watched the game time clock. The time jumps appear longer than the actual freeze time..freezes etc recorded as well.....

Looks like our T Box finally died.  Blue light showing on front of T Box but have not managed to get anything other than a black TV screen tonight.  Over last few weeks have been getting a padlock displayed with the words "not subscribed" for a few seconds before resuming normal service.  Not certain if that is related?

Try it again in the morning.  On one occasion in the past, I had to reboot about four times before it came back to life.  This might be the case for you also.

How long did you switch the modem and TBox off for?  Maybe it needs a bit longer.  Usually a brief reboot works for us but once we did have to reboot it twice.

Usually leave it 30 secs & previously rarely required more than 2 re-boots.  However, this time we have tried about 10 times - some left 30 secs but others much longer (overnight after the missed rugby).

Technician arriving in ~30 mins.  Got straight through (!!) to help desk last night - they tried to reset from their end but got no response from the unit.

Darn!  I hope you have better luck with the new one (well assuming they can't fix the old one).  Makes me think I should watch everything in my planner in case mine ever dies.  I would be so annoyed to lose all my recordings.
