lanceanz: I paid the $499 and was treated fairly by TCL when I quit. I'd had almost 2 years use out of it so certainly didn't expect to get my full $499 back, even though it'd given me a lot of grief. Based on my experiences with TCL I'd be very surprised if anyone had to take them to small claims. If you did, then I very much doubt you'd be awarded $499.

Great to hear TCL saw you well.

Given the current cost of mySky -  $599 [1], I think a total refund is more than reasonable after 2 years use.  It's reasonable to expect that such a device would last 10 years and the current replacement cost of the service to something that is fault free is $100 more.

I would however agree that you don't have right to expect any refund on the service payments.

So, if you were to take a case that you'd paid $25 dollars a month and the service fails half the time, so you want $10 a month back for the entire 2 years, I think that would be being unreasonable.

$599 does make my point for earlier that others have agree with though.

At present, with some competition the entry price is $500.  I noted that you can rent the PVR for the same amount for each provider.

Take away the competition and will $15 become $20?  or 25% more.

Sky are already charging 20% more just for the PVR.

This does raise the interesting question thou of PVR vendor choice by TCL and if they have simply chosen a unit that is to cheap?

Don - what motivates you to keep posting the same moans /political message over and over and over given you say in the following quote you:
- are not a Telstra customer
- dont read the posts much
- dont think about the telstraclear tv service in your posts
- don?t know the background to Saturn TV / Sky relationship.

Personally you should be appreciative that Telstraclear monitor this forum and structure your posts to add value to our lives by helping them to resolve these issues.

DonGould:
Oh, sorry, I wasn't thinking about the cable tv service. I used to call up for a bit of pixialation, I agree with you guys, pay for a premium service, I just expect it to work.

But I confess I don't know the back story. The impression I get is that Saturn brought TV competition to a space that was dominated by Sky, so grew a very loyal following.

I don't read the posts much, but I do note the number of them and it really doesn't seem there's that much noise.

I know it's what stops me from signing up though. Last thing I want is poor WAF on my case.

Fair questions...

1.  I was a TV customer.  The customer service response to my issues with pixilation really annoyed me.  Gary will tell you my reaction to customer service teams that really annoy me.

2.  When I do pop my head in I often see the same rant carrying on and on.  This week I questioned that people don't seem to know their rights under CGA and how to use the dispute tribunal.

Personally I think the CGA is a wonderful law.  It's saved me thousands of dollars in the past.

I honestly get the impression that some of these users/posters are simply here to talk up the problems with the product.

I question if they're hanging on to them just so they can then moan about them.

I question if TCL is having an impact on Sky and some people are just using the product to bash back in a passive aggressive kind of way.

3.  I think the Saturn / Sky background has to be put to bed eventually, if there's bad blood.

Personally I'd like to support this space by being a TV customer.  I've been offered a free T-Box (as have you all for a 2 year BB commitment).

It annoys me that TCL continue to persist with this vendor and not just replace the unit.  As things stand there's no way I'm going to let one in my door.

Perhaps they need to put another unit up side by side and let us choose something else?

It has been four months since my return to using a T-Box, still the only issue I have occasionally is a very brief stutter with sound and  very occasionally a very brief puse in video, and I mean only a second or two.

I have not had a single record fail.

CGA could probably apply, and I can't see why it wouldn't be a full refund, as you have to pay for something else to replace it with. Is this the longest ever thread here, nearly at 100 pages.

But hang on a second doesn't sky just re-sell Sky TV?  Yeah they may have a few extra channels but for the most part they re-sell Sky.

So I see no competition here at all.  They spent 1 1/2 Mil or so on their new digital head end about 2 years ago from memory and I would doubt they get more than 20-30% discount from Sky.  Plus they run their Irdeto and Verimatrix CA and need to get some sort of return from their investment of all those STBs.  So when you're in a hole.. all you can do is keep on going.

I do feel for TelstraClear and the broadcast folks such as ZollyMonster et al.

But I would have dropped digicom and moved on since the boxes just don't seem up to it.. and 3+ years is 2+ years too long.

Me I would let punters get their own STBs and use the Irdeto CA they already have. But Sky wouldn't have a bar of that so TelstraClear have no wiggle room at all.

Didn't I read somewhere that the TelstraClear/Sky agreement is up for renewal sometime soon? Perhaps they could go their own way and ... oh wait, Sky hold most of the content rights don't they so that wouldn't be much good either Foot in Mouth

Without Sky Sports... There is no point in attempting to run a Pay TV operation in NZ and no one has deep enough pockets to compete with Sky.

So I can't see TelstraClear doing anything other than bleating in the news media how hard they have it and then rolling over and paying Sky.  Since why would anyone pay anything for Freeview over Cable when Wellington and Christchurch have UHF Freeview coverage?
