We are using a Vodem K3805-z USB modem which does connect to the Vodafone mobile broadband network but the web browser isn't able to find any URL on the internet.  The signal strength is 'good' (3 bars of 5) and is connecting using 3G (not GPRS).  We have removed all drivers, uninstalled software, reinstalled latest software but still no better.  The browser works fine when connecting to the internet via a router.

Are there any diagnostic tests we can perform to see if it's a network or account configuration problem?  Does the vodem need any specific settings to allow it to work on the network and connect to the internet?

We have been in contact with Vodafone support and they say that the account is all set up correctly at their end and should work.

Check your anti virus software, Seen this many times.

Test this by connecting with a DUN connection only

*99# no user name or password

If the account was not setup correct it would not connect

Thanks - will try the DUN. I did try disabling the real-time protection but perhaps I'll have to knock the anti-virus right out.

I turned Firewall and Anti-virus off but still couldn't connect to the internet.  Set up DUN and it did allow access, but the Vodafone software says that it is not connected? So... is this a wireless dial-up connection?

Any recommendations as to the next steps I should take to get the vodem working properly?

Thanks for the words of wisdom so far.

Have you got NAV firewall on your machine?

No, I was using Windows Firewall and AVG Free which doesn't have a built-in firewall.  I have uninstalled AVG completely and just using Sunbelt Vipre.  But, now that you mention it, the computer is a HP laptop and may have come with NAV installed and I assumed that I had completely removed it - maybe not!

Why do you ask?

I've removed NAV using the Norton Removal Tool but unfortunately no improvement.  Interestingly I can send a SMS message from the Vodafone application via the modem, but I suppose it's using a different network.

Try one or both of these:

Reset tcp/ip stack

Clear dns cache

Google is your friend.
This seems to clear up connection probs especially on xp machines.
