To the best of my knowledge it's a content server for Steam titles so if you set your server to New Zealand in your steam client then if the content your accessing is on the NZ server then it's free if it's hosted on Xnet's server if not then normal traffic charges apply.

In Steam you can set a preferred region/server, however the Steam client will download from multiple servers to increase download speed. If you want to restrict Steam to the Xnet server you need a 3rd party tool like SteamWatch, Steam Manager etc.

Pretty sure Xnet's steam content mirror is in the "local" group for traffic accounting ie: un-metered.

I'm well aware of the Xnet steam server and all the associated caveats with downloading data from it. I see it as a significant perk of using Xnet's service and when looking at different deals offered by other ISP I keep in the back of my mind as its something I used regularly.

Obviously its difficult for ISP's to compete on price and still offer quality server (re Slingshot), but was wondering whether there may be some other services that Xnet are considering offer there customers to sweeten the deal?

Xnet offer free downloads from the GPDownloads site, but these days it just full of crappy gameplay videos and nothing worth downloading. It would be great if something similar could be implemented with more useful downloads.

Surely if GPDownloads is practical/cost effective then a similar website hosting Windows patches, service packs, Linux ISO's and other larger legal downloads could be practical?

It was just an idea...

I'd rather see them work on sensible caching system, QoS, handling the super heavy abusive users and more transit so they can viably offer un-metered internet.

With more ISP's offering un-metered now (Slinghsot AYCE, Compass Massive, Maxnet Un-metered, Trustpower Kinect) I think it becomes more viable as the super extreme heavy users are more spread out not all on the one ISP/service.

What are you calling a abusive users there's still a lot of customers on the Torrent (75gig free offpeak data) plan and a lot of them would be using nearly all of that each month like myself. I do not consider myself a high usage user but for those that use only 5 - 10 gig a month 75 gig a month is a lot and they couldn't imagine themselves ever using that amount.

I have friends that use 150 - 400 gig a month I would call them high users (not with xnet). Slingshots new(ish) plans cater up to 250 gig a month. I agree that better caching and more local traffic would allow for a better experience but I would like to see some more competitive pricing.

Xnet hosts an Akamai cache server, so I usually find that things from Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Blizzard, and other big-name companies often get treated as local traffic - but it's not guaranteed.

But we've also already seen WXC discuss and clarify that the priciing your bound by is beyond there control.

What I find funny is companies are rolling out prices for services some of them can't offer or can only offer to a very small group of people.

Where's the pricing to see that UFB (with these oh so average pricing packages although $199 for 1TB is very good) into our homes and what hardware will be needed etc.

How about some complete picture pricing not some plans nearly no one (if not no one) can actually ring up and sign onto and use instead of all the WXC / Xnet bashing as at the end of the day your all more than welcome to get your broadband supply from one of dozens if not 100's of providers around the country. Even those in places where there's no broadband option there's still satellite or mobile data options.

1TB data offered by Orcon works out to 33GB per day every day. That is almost 10 times what we use per month.

International speed issues are not as significant as it used to be, because our international connections got upgraded by big overseas companies (indirectly). NZ is considered a stable country so many corporates from other countries use us for data backup which needs fast speed. The limitation has returned to local speed and congestion (which is constantly addressed with upgrades and now fibre roll-out).

When we signed up with XNet we were happy to pay the price they charged (which was low at the time), and only once in many years was the data cost increased and only for new customers and people changing their plans (I'm still on $1 per GB and free static IP, think some customers are even still on free national data). People are upset about the others undercutting pricing, but that is probably because they have the numbers to afford loosing money while gaining customers until the network pricing is set, where as XNet is waiting for the pricing before they will update their plans. XNet is getting flack for other companies deciding to loose money, not because XNet has done anything wrong/different.

I'm not even sure if it is worth dragging this post up anymore?

It has been 20 days since the last comments here, does xnet have anything concrete for us?

Well it is worth bringing this thread back up as quite simply November was when we were getting something then the Comcom messed that up and now two months ago in there bills were sent out the put in there a couple of weeks until new plans or whatever the exact wording was. It's been two months that does not count as a few weeks in my books anymore.

This on top of the few months we all waited prior to Xmas and then the few months since then. It's written in black and white on their own documentation sent to what I would assume is potentially thousands of customers why is it so hard for someone to come back and advise us of one of two things (or even better both)

What are we likely to be getting and or

When are we likely to be getting it???

I am not trying to single anyone out here but please can someone from WXC come on here and give us some sort of update as your own paperwork is now telling us it's happening but for some reason it's not.

By the way I am happy with the service and the product I currently receive from WXC but ultimately with no updates it really seems like we've been fed a line of BS and by putting it on paper your company may possibly be breaching something by not actually delivering anything.

Like I've said many times just a little communication goes a long way.

This is the reason maverick said he didn't want to post anything, and is the reason he'll keep from posting anything. WXC don't want to set your expectations and have things go awry again. What exactly have WXC breached, apart from expectations?

ditto.

Fellas - I'm not trying to be rude here but if you're not satisfied with what's being provided, go to another ISP - it's really that simple.
