quickymart: Ah right, my bad...but still my general point remains that some people are unhappy with TCL this weekend.

yep, my included.

See I wouldn't be as angry and frustrated if everyone had slow speeds and was on the same boat...but when you have people without any hitches and gees, I have a guy who is about 500 metres from me who is fine, it gets you even more angry. You can't do anything. Some 'free weekend' this is. I really would like compensation tbh.

Any thing internet wise is a joke, but particularly anything that FTP related. Cant' stream any online videos at all.

I'm getting 1/3 of my usual speed and tbh, downloading is worse than the speedtests would indicate.

Been on Geekzone before but forgot my account name and email attached to it lols.

3.25mbit up... are you on the DOCSIS3 modem like MF?

What results do you get to .us?

No I am on a 5100 (Docsis 2).

Ok, I'm confused... how is it that you get more than 2.2mbit up load then?

I'm on a Bizplan.. so 15 down / 4 up.

Not impressed. Trying to play WoW, and getting latency of 400-900ms (normally low 200s), with longer spikes on top of that. On cable in Chch.

Yeah and one has to guess that there are a lot of other people that are having a great time downloading far more then they pay for (and not posting here). I would love to see what Telstra take away from this weekend and what the motivations for doing it are. It does seem that they are working to at least improve to current situation and I am sure at least part of why they are doing this is to find where the weak points of their network are. However for now it does seem it has backfired somewhat as at least for a number of people the network is not handling it and is causing a significantly worse experience then the customers are used to.

and the problem isn't just international bandwidth either I might add..local downloads are affected via standard local websites and from localised fast servers such as Akamai servers.

@ TelstraClear if you read this post.

A friend made a suggestion that I agree with also, you should've done the "Free Usage Weekends" in different locations over a long period of time.

Wouldn't matter in my case considering the guy up the road and around the corner is fine.
Other parts of Chch are fine while others, like the part I'm stuck in (Riccarton / Middleton) is grinding to a halt.

This is getting me rather angry. Gees, I wouldn't mind a little bit of a slowdown if I actually could do stuff the way I normally would.

My point is it is one weekend and was heavily marketed so people knew it was coming and anyone on these forums should have been able to tell it was going to have an adverse effect on the network.

If they use the results as a way to design their network upgrades in a more efficient way then in the long run, it is a positive.

I'm now sitting on about 30% normal speed with my downloads (On a 15mbps connection), so definitely slower from even mid night last night, however all other aspects (for me that is browsing and gaming) are still unaffected.

does this suggest that there is local congestion on the cable node as opposed to backhaul? I'm in riccaton \ sockburn area and noticed lots of people have the cable service in our area, I will check speeds when I'm home.

Interesting thing is that so far there aren't really many complaints at all.

If the gaming thing was really that bad I'd have thought we'd have seen the whole gaming community on there backing up the claims that it's crap.

But the reality is that we've only seen a hand full of comments.

Have you run the faults desk and lodged a fault?

Have you even lodged a fault on GZ's own faults page?

" report a fault in addition to your post (this opens a new window, you report after you post) or check existing faults. "

These are all the sort of metrics that Telstra management will look at when considering what to do next.

I wonder how many post we'll see next week asking when the next one will be and boasting about how much traffic they've been able to move?

Will TCL just reposition from the 'gaming network' to the 'consumer content network'?  I don't know, but currently my phone service is now crap, but I've got YouTube running full steam on my TV for my son, so suddenly I have a very different product.

New modem installed, connection is back. Something with the old modem, DOCSIS3, overload and more. Who knows exactly. Post-mortem to be conducted soon.

Back on my download from Geekzone VMs and Crashplan uploads.

Great thanks to the TelstraClear team who worked on identifying what was actually going on here. They deserve a beer now.
