adrianj:
Teeps: I totally agree, a lot of customers have got something that they do not pay for over the weekend, and I am sure they are very happy about that. On the flip side though, there are customers who have not got what they pay for, never mind anything for free.

I have no problem in TC making this offer to customers IF their network is capable of serving ALL their customers, that includes those who do not pay for their use to this level as well as those of us who are.

I have already spoken to TC and had my line checked yesterday to find if it was just a problem with my connection, it wasn't, I was told that Hataitai is having problems because of the free data weekend and I would just have to wait until Monday when it would be back to normal, so yes, I haven't just been making "1000 online rants" as you suggest, but have actually contacted TC. I will follow up tomorrow with an email (letters are so old fashioned now, but at these speeds your suggestion may be right, it could be quicker!) to let them know how their free data weekend affected my usage.

i couldn't agree more with Teep's comments above. i also contacted TC and will also be following up with an email to the complaints line listed earlier

I think tcl will apologise but your terms and conditions states it all, what if they refer you to them when you ask them about the slow speeds and congestion?

What if? if that's what happens then there is not a lot else i can do - but my voice has been heard and TC will know that their actions have pi$$ed off some of their customers, and that they need to check out their Hataitai nodes before doing it again.

if they do run a promotion like this again, i'll vote with my feet - there are plenty of other service providers i can go to.

Since nobody has mentioned performance in Karori yet I figured I'd add my two cents. I'm hoping someone with a bit of networking knowledge at TelstraClear reads this.
The speeds here have been consistently like Haitai, never above 3.5 Mbit/s. I'm located in South Karori, apparently with a very strong cable signal - there's an 8db attenuator on the coax input to our T-Box.
Here's a representative speed test result from TC's Wellington server:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 719 kbps (89.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2228 kbps (278.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 16 ms
Sun Dec 04 2011 18:16:58 GMT+1300 (New Zealand Daylight Time)

I use 2talk VoIP as my primary land-line. Call quality over TC cable is normally excellent, but this weekend it's been very choppy using the G.711A codec at 64Kbit/s. When I asked the other end how I sounded the call quality was described as good - it's the downstream link that's having trouble. Jitter and packet loss are really killing it. Here's some results for a ping to 2talk's servers:
Ping statistics for 202.180.76.182:
Packets: Sent = 537, Received = 489, Lost = 48 (8% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 390ms, Average = 36ms
Even the first hop outside my own network is giving issues, so it looks like the node I'm connected to is getting hammered:
Ping statistics for 218.101.61.124:
Packets: Sent = 290, Received = 266, Lost = 24 (8% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 10ms, Maximum = 133ms, Average = 22ms

The way the network is operating at the moment favors Torrent users. With a singe FTP connection open to my private server on the American West coast I was getting around 30KBytes/s; upping to 20 connections resulted in a data rate of 600KBytes/s. Using shorter routing queues with smart queue management like RED or similar would probably help a lot and ensure a fairer apportion of bandwidth, as would enabling ECN - TC engineers this is directed at you.

adrianj: I am staggered that TC would do this promotion in full knowledge that it would slow down the network, without having a team watching the network utilisation ready to maintain something like a quality of service to it's users.

Once a pipe is full, a pipe is full, and there's nowt can be done about it. If they'd got a spare pipe for use over this weekend, they'd have plumbed it in before Friday 6pm

too true... do they not have any traffic shaping on the cable network? i thought there was a fair use policy and the tools to enforce it.

Have to agree with the sentiment ( and if this turns out to be regular then I will have to look elsewhere)

I have not done anything different this weekend than normal (Surf sites, a couple of Youtube videos and an iTunes purchases) and I feel I am in back in Chello days

There is no free lunch. I am paying for the unlimited data cap by being unable to do the above at the "normal speed" range I have had.

6 hrs to download an iTunes audio book vs a usual 30mins is a big difference.

I will be writing to TC a polite email urging them not to repeat this.

One of the great things of the TelstraClear service: there's no filtering or shaping of any kind, except for the transparent proxy for caching purposes.

I understand this is your experience. But it seems it's localised. I've just downloaded a full SD movie (about 1.4 GB) from iTunes in under 45 minutes (usually we get movies in under 10 minutes).

So while not as fast as usual, not as bad as six hours. We are in Johnsonville, and on DOCSIS3 (which is different but still using the same node).

It would help a lot if people posting speeds, etc, could also report approximate location.

Sounds like there are unfortunately too many subscribers connected to your cmts line card, the ratio of subscribers:downloaders is obviously greater than the calculated worse case data throughput they would expect from its users over this weekend. Your line card either coincidentally has a lot more users downloading or it has been over utilized with subscibers. If you go to another provider it might provide more shared bandwidth to the other users as long as they don't connect another customer to the line card. A lot of other nodes haven't suffered as much as haitaitai from what i've read.

i am dissapointed with TC, If they offer a free broadband weekend. then they should be able to supply all their customers, but it seems they have failed to do that which makes me think whether i should continue using Telstraclear.
Stats before
5-10MBPS Download
1MBPS Upload(Always had that speed)
STATS Now
About 1MBPS Download
0-1MBPS Upload(Always had that)
I Cant watch youtube without pausing the videos. i tried downloading files, i got a 97KBPS Download, sometimes 100-200KBPS. My average is 500KBPS-1MBPS
I Also am on ADSL2+

Here are my results for this weekend using TelstraClear's speed tests and speedtest.net

I am on ADSL in Whitby, Wellington.  The first row (Friday night before 6PM) is usually what I get during off-peak times.

Roses are red, that much is true, but violets are purple, not ****ing blue!

I'm in Napier, For the past 24 hours, all files I have coming down from Rapidshare have been coming down at 100kbs. Normally this is around 700kbs, so basically 15% of normal DL speed. So extremely slow, My Month of 40gb ended on 3/12/11, so downloaded some 25gb on the 1st December, so I was 92% through my allotment before the non metered began.
All in all, I think I have downloaded around 40gig for free, so I can not complain, had wanted to do about 70Gig. At 23:30 I will run a IPCONFIG /Release, and Renew, to ensure none of what I have done this weekend leaches into my new month allotment which began today.
