Printertech: I signed up to the $75 deal today.  Free router, 2 months free. There was no mention of $80 joining fee.
As long as the router has similar wifi coverage as the Thompson 585 I have now, I will be happy.


I paid the first month's bil yesterday, which included $80 joining fee and $3 wire maintenance fee.

I just connected up with the $75 plan today. Speed is faster than what i was getting with Actrix. Wifi around the house looks as goo, or better than the Thompson 595v7. No mention of $80 join/connection fee.  I haven't seen an account yet though. Help desk was great. It wasn't their fault that I had gateway and Primary DNS set up on my computer. mind you they didn't suggest that as a problem when I couldn't connect.

There is only a connection fee if you don't currently have a phone number attached to your location (If you're VOIP the connection fee is waived).

Hope this clears things up.

i just opened my bill to find a $99 joining fee.  they went over the contract in detail with me over the phone and made no mention of the $99 dollar fee.  they did say i wasn't eligible for the first two months free, or free modem because new customers had to pay that joining fee.  i think i could rightfully assume from that, that i wouldn't be subject to the joining fee right?

totally gutted, hadn't budgeted for this and heading into winter is not a good time for unexpected bills ...

I'm considering this. As I have my own modem + router they offered me 3 free months if I didn't need their hardware.

No mention of a connection / joining fee was made either.

I generally use about 50GB so the overage on the 40GB plan would just be an extra $20 and I'd only pay for what I use.

My only concern is what are the costs if I need to cancel early.

Can anyone tell me the landline calling rates for the Telstra $75/m package plan? I am thinking of switching to it from telecom. Also what happens if I need to increase my gb's? thanks

Also regarding the original topic, I can understand existing customers feeling ripped off, esp since they can claim loyalty, but 1 - all providers do this not just telstra; 2 - it only applies to on contract customers.. if your contract has expired but you are still using telstra off contract you will be able to get the deal... this is standard with all providers as well; 3 - prices are coming down all the time; after people are locked into a good new deal, a better deal will come along they wont be able to get and you can (although i admit this is only 12month contract and slingshot have no contract...) ie it should kinda even itself out... you're on contract so when a cheaper deal comes along, you are getting ripped off... but after that, when an even  cheaper deal comes along, you get and even better deal... (you might need some luck timing it right though); 4 - its a bit unfair to criticise them... you have agreed a contract; every bodies contract expires at different times; they wont therefore be able to reduce prices, without undermining the point of contracts - and finally - this could just tell you that there's no need to be loyal... its a competitive marketplace with deals all around which themselves should tempt 'disloyalty', and add this "new customers only" practice and i think loyalty isnt, or at least cant, be expected... 

but basically i think it should even itself out over the long run...

i signed up to this deal... the only negative point is that after the 12months you will be charged $105 per month... although you are off contract so can take up any other better offer... which is what i am banking on

That's the killer part, the $75 is not a permanent price, only for the first 12 months.  If there's not something similar at the end I'll move back to Vodafone.

No mention of a joining fee either, so they can stick that if they try it on!

riahon: Loyalty is what you give to your family or best friend, sports team etc, not your utilities. 


I agree with where you are coming from.  This is pretty common in NZ actually, people sticking with one service provider or even employer thinking they will get looked after for years of service etc.  In practise, you're paying or being paid for a service/product and you're square at that.  You don't actually get anything else for staying there for years and years, unless it's specifically worked into the contract.

The bit that cracks me up though about your comments above was the sports team bit.  People get incredibly passionate about 'their' team, but 99% of the time, if anyone from that team was walking down the road, they wouldn't even recognise them.

All up though, I agree with lots of the comments here, and often you're going to need a lot more than $20 a year difference etc to switch internet, power or gas providers simply because of the potential grief that can cause, either with a loss of service, or a bunch of time sorting out miscalculated bills etc initially.  And yeah, having a customer support centre that answers the phone in under an hour is a good start!

I just switched too from naked cable and VOIP to a phone line with 40Gb.  Their retention service provided this.  No offer of free router or 2 months but then I'm an existing customer.  Wife was upset at the number of times phone would ring, and we could not hear the other party.  Using WXC for VOIP ....

And then quickflix comes along... what are the chances that TC will zero rate them ?  :(

Slim if they have existing supply deals with SKY.  Though SKY seem open to it, as long as the provider zero rates their own iSKY service.....

Great article in the paper (or average article, but great to see it being discussed) about how SKY has a monopoly on sports broadcasting in NZ, thereby reducing the chances of other providers offering alternative/hopefully cheaper sports coverage, which is what I really want.  (Happy to bet blurays from the store to get HD audio and less compression, but that's just me.  I'm only after SKY etc for live sport, or even delays sport that's not offered delayed on free to air TV).
