And how would I go about quantifying it?

I'm getting fairly dismal performance on my home broadband connection (modem shows around 1.4 Mb/s and I'm lucky if I hit 200 KB/s during real downloads) given that the chorus site shows my address covered by both ADSL2+ and VSDL.

Is this my most likely cause:

and how much is the wiring on my property likely to contribute? Where is the best place to start looking for the cause?

EDIT:  Sorry I had missed the sticky right at the top of the forum covering this, though during my admittedly quick skim of it I didn't see much in the way of actually confirming it is my wiring at fault or how to quantify the effect it's having.  I have done isolation testing already, there are only 2 phone jacks in the house and I have disconnected the alarm that was previously connected to one of them... so I'm running out of ideas and just looking for more.

Start by checking your modem sync speed, and posting those stats here. That will give you a good initial indication of whether there are wiring related problems, or whether to look elsewhere.

Ok thanks for the help; I apologise if I'm covering things already covered, but I see a lot of posts\guides covering this but am at a bit of a loss on the best place to start.


I will post stats from my modem when I get home.


My provider is Vodafone;  How would I go about finding out if my connection is to a cabinet or exchange? Just a case of contacting them and asking?

Hi, have a look at www.chorus.co.nz/sat and put your address in there then using the show ADSL exchange/cabinets it will show detail which you are connected to, if its a cabinet and your on a LLU connection (Voda Red Network) then you may be suffering the issues Steves blog mentions.

As mentioned in my post, the chorus sat tool is showing me in both a ADSL2+ and VDSL polygon :)  And yes, when they sold me on the switch to vodafone getting me onto the Red network was the main selling point.

When it first opens the VDSL2 and exchange polygons are both shown on the map and I can toggle the ADSL2+ polygon on and off; not sure if that makes a difference.

Hi so clearly your in a cabinet area yet still connected to the exchange to be on the LLU/Red network, this will screw your speeds as steve's blog indicates, contact Voda and ask to be moved to a wholesale connection.

Edit, I recommend you do this and it makes sense to check your wiring regardless if you want optimum performance, although fist see what attenuation, and sync speeds you get once moved, those results will determine how much of an your house wiring is impeding speeds.

Thanks mate, that's actually a big help and along the lines I was thinking already.

If I'm reading the dates right on those cabinets listed on the SAT, they were only completed well after I signed up with Vodafone; and given that they were really pushing the whole Red network thing when I signed up, what you say makes sense.

I'm curious though: does the SAT give you enough info to know I'm definitely on an LLU connection or is it just the most likely scenario given the above info?

Hi, the SAT is pretty reliable, there is sometimes the odd error but typically the info you are looking for is very reliable. I would say if it shows you are well in the shown cabinet polygon then the reality will be you are.

Hi, if you are still on a LLU connection then it must be from the exchange as Voda have no gear in cabinets, so I have assumed what you have said (ie you are on the Red network) is correct.

Also the purpose of the cabinetisation is to reduce line lengths to under 2km (typically well less than 1km) so there is a serious fail in that upgrade if it results in you being on the cabinet and getting only 1.4Mb/s sync which is less than a 10th of what should be available. Looking at MOD/AN's polygon no one off that cabinet should be more than 500m of cable from it.

Ok, makes perfect sense thanks - they told me I would be going onto the Red Network when I first signed up; I suppose it's too much to hope that they would have automatically moved me to that cabinet once it became available.

I've emailed them with a request and will ring them later today to follow up.

As you say it would be a serious fail if I were connected to that cabinet and seeing the performance I am.  Though that was part of the reason I started the thread...  I was just looking for annecdotal evidence or otherwise on whether that sort of performance degradation would be likely just from the wiring in my house, given that I see repeated assertions on these forums that the wiring on your premises is the first place you should start looking :)

As mentioned, once moved post your stats and we can determine if there is much advantage in changing wiring from there, however in the meantime maybe a brief description of what you currently have, ie how many sockets, how many devices (phones/faxs/skyboxs) are connected, are they all filtered, how many filters, is there an alarm panel that connects to the phone (even if there is no monitoring contract) and do you have an idea of the wiring layout (ie the order of wiring from socket to socket and where they may split).
