Hi, I have some friends coming over from the UK for 3 months, and they have asked me what their best options are for calling and data while they are over here.
I'm not sure what phones they have or which provider they use in the UK, have asked and waiting for a reply.
Is it better they just roam, or should they get a local SIM when they get here?

For 3 months I would certainly think a local SIM will be orders of magnitude cheaper than roaming.

I guess it depends on what their usage pattern is. If they plan on calling back to the UK regularly, maybe look if any of the providers have an overseas calling addon. (I think Vodafone used to at least)

Do you have a link? I have looked at the Vodafone site but could only see options for if I was going for overseas, not for someone coming here.

Demeter: Hi Kiwifidget - try this link: http://www.vodafone.co.nz/travel-sim/

Thanks, that looks very useful.
Does anyone know if Telecom offer something similar?

First step would be to see how much it would cost them to get their phones unlocked as they'll probably have SIM locked devices.

That travel sim is actually quite a nice solution. On par with the value of standard plans too when you take into account the international minutes.

Just make sure you change from the plan just before 60 days is up
