Old lady I know asked me why her wirelss network was super slow. I discovered she had a router with a SIM card + cordless phone + wirleless dongle in her PC. I've never seen this before today. Can someone tell me what this system is called please. Plus, what is the reason to use this system - it's like going back to dialup. I just need educating on this system - new to me. Thanks.

It’s called ‘fixed wireless internet’ and is sold by Spark/VF/Skinny as a way to use their ‘spare’ 4G bandwidth for people who either can’t get better than ADSL anyway, or don’t mind the slightly restrictive cap.

It enables the cellular companies to leverage their own network instead of paying a big chunk of your broadband bill to Chorus for their backend.

I’m on Skinny Broadband like this for $52/100Gb as I refuse to pay $2,600 to Chorus to connect my copper line on my 2 year old house when I know fibre will be here in 3 years anyway...

I need to talk to our neighbour about her slow internet, but I don't know how to as we only know as we were "borrowing" it for a while when ours was down!

I know a little more than nothing but not much...

The 4G wireless fixed broadband should be pretty snappy, up to 100mbit, so should be much faster than ADSL and not dissimilar to VDSL. The slowness appears to be the wifi, so like any wifi issues, that should be attended to
