myfullflavour: We have unlocked sims available on request, mikrotik and teltonika are popular alternatives to the standard Huawei and TPLink modems.

And unlimited available on FWA / RBI depending on available capacity at your local cell tower.

$139 +gst per month for unlimited that is a lot better than i have seen before.

Would there be room at the tower locations on Carrington road Taranaki I think the ID's are 47313 and 27684 on the Arcgis maps.

I have my own homebuilt openwrt router that is currently behind a huawei b618 because of the TAC lock.

On RBI2 towers we can do even sharper pricing for unlimited.

Yes primo is here but sadly we can get it here there is to many trees between us and the two towers either side of us , My mate works there and he come out and tried to get a signal but sadly no luck.

I really should of sait trees and hills , my mate showed me the side elevation of the topology maps and we would have to bounce it off another point and it would cost us 12k for a solar repeater station unless we could convince others to share cost.

I can take my $34 a month unlimited business mobile plan and use it in a rural area, I just don't see how it can be a $400 a month service, they would be loosing money for me using my cellphone data in rural locations if that was the case.

Then that is not a fair comparison. Also most people on an unlimited mobile plan are unlikely to pull down a terabyte a month of data, whereas an unlimited home broadband connection is much more likely to. So you can't really compare the two plans.

I saw some of the quotes to build the towers and get power up the hill during the RBI1 project. Some of the power connections alone were $500k, more commonly it was in excess of $100k. Towers typically $100-200k

With such a low populaton density and low number of potential subscribers the monthly price to make it work would have been huge.

Your urban $34/month service multiplied by number of dwellings in local area would have not have covered the costs to build the towers, liven them up and maintain/future upgrade. It just happens that they can also be a benefit to urban users that very occasionally roam into a rural area.

I would hate to think what it would cost to get fibre to the tower, power is likely close by but fiber would be a much further run.

On the west coast I belive they have used Microwave links as it was cheaper but their focus was on voice not data.

As mentioned in a previous post, if you put a sim allocated to a Mobile phone into a router it will probably not work, if you change the IMEI of the router to match that of a mobile phone it will work, however if you are pulling down the traffic at levels expected from a fixed line connection as mentioned by others you will get cut off very quickly.
