At least we think it is tesltra clear with the issues.

We are with Vadacom, who use 2talk.  We have two phone lines going through the vadacom cloud system.  Which basically means we plug the preconfigured phones into the net, and we are away.

However we can rarely get more than one line at a time.  If my boss is on a call I can't make a call, and incoming calls, while ringing, just can't be answered, they sit on the line and we can't hear anything.

This is the case maybe 8 out of 10 calls, so very occasionally we do have two lines.

We have tried three different modems, Draytek Vigor 2750n, a gigabit something or other and a netcom something something twinned with a thompson.  

We have a VDSL line in takapuna.  Bizzarely enough we get the best phone connection when just using an adsl2 modem.  The Draytek is VDSL, but when using that, or the thompson/netcom combo outoging calls will just fail, and sometimes an incoming call with disconnect an existing call.

On the ADSL2 we just have the original problems mentioned above.

NONE of the modems have SIP ALG enabled, and even tellnetted into the draytek to disable it, the other two don't even have the options in there.

Vadacom/2talk are sure it isn't them, and Telstra have no idea what is going on, but the IT guy thinks it might be a firewall setting at Telstra's end.

Any ideas or people with similar issues?

Sounds like a classic double NAT issue.

I guess NAT issues. Or maybe a firewall is blocking something. Would have thought the Draytek would work really well. But check there are firewall rules to not block 5060.

That's what Vadacom thought at first, but over 3 modems with firewalls turned off completely on all of them, that can't be the issue sadly.

Double nat issue?

The thompson/netcomm combo. This is a VDSL thompson modem? And it is fully bridged to the Netcomm? For starters I haven't heard too many good things said about Thompson's VDSL modems but unless it is full bridging (or atleast half bridging/IP extension) to the netcomm you have double NAT.

Have you done any packet captures? Sounds like you can emulate the fault easily so set up wireshark and grab a few captures of when the fault happens.

Firewall won't affect double NAT.

Do you have the modem/router and then another router in your configuration? If so then the modem should be configured for Bridge mode.

Yeah everyone blamed the Thompson to begin with as well, so that is why we bought the draytek and ditched the thompson, yet we had exactly the same problems.

Or with just ADSL same issues. At first I thought it might have been limited bandwith, but on vdsl we had 2.0 up and adsl had 0.7 up, and we have similar ADSL speeds at my old work with Vadacom and we had 5 lines running at the time.

Still worth setting up Wireshark on the Draytek?

Before you go on wireshark you have not commented on about having two routers in your LAN or how they are configured.

This was asked three times already.

Sorry about that, missed those posts.

We ditched the Thompson/Netcom bridging altogether.

Right now there is just a Genuislite Orcon ADSL2 modem set up, as that is the one we have least problems with.

Ideally we would like the Draytek as it is VDSL, but again it was just plugged straight into the VDSL port., and only ever one at a time! :)

Neither had firewalls configured.

Genius has a SIP ALG that can't be disabled from the GUI. I don't know whether the Genius Lite has the same.

A wiresharp SIP capture is going to show what's going on, but you're obviously going to need to have a good understanding of SIP to understand it.

Google tells me it doesn't

With the draytek, I looked at this page http://www.draytek.net.nz/draytek/support/disable-sip-alg/

It said that sip alg was disabled by default, I tried to see even if i could enable or disable it from telnet but just had error messages

Sounds like NAT.  You can turn off firewalls/etc until you're blue in the face, but unless your ISP is giving you more than one IP address, you're definitely still doing NAT.

One thing to check is if the phones can be configured to use a different local port for SIP (i.e. the port number at your end, not the port number on the SIP server they're talking to).  If they're both trying to use port 5060, they may fight over who gets assigned it by the NAT router first.

I had a look on the genius diagnostics and the IP address for both phones have a source port and destination port of 5060 under UDP

But also (looking on next page) also 5004

So with the Draytek is that the only device ie the phones plug into the draytek and that plugs into the VDSL2? No other layer 3 devices like firewalls etc.? Definitely sounds like NAT in any case. Perhaps Vadacom's system doesn't like multiple SIP registrations from the same IP.

Bring on IPv6 and no more of this crap..... until someone bright thinks of IPv6 NAT....

Can you post that list showing us the lines for all the ports the two phones are using?  Your anonymisation should relaly only need to obsure that Pesudo IP column...

Ask your VoIP provider if in their provisioning of the phones they can allocate them different source ports for SIP/RTP.

Perhaps Vadacom's system doesn't like multiple SIP registrations from the same IP.


It would be a pretty useless hosted PBX if that was the case!
