I just downloaded the 2talk Connect Android app and found that it allows you to send & receive SMS messages to/from your account's main 028 number.

This is the only NZ web service I'm aware of that supports SMS and voice handling on the same number without a SIM card (like Google Voice), and a feature I'm very interested in.

(I currently use TNZ's "Hosted SIM" service to host my SIM card and redirect my calls and SMS so I can deal with them online), and there are plenty of other companies what will give you a virtual number that does SMS or Voice but not both.

Does anyone know of any other services that can actually provision a single virtual number with voice and SMS?

I can't seem to find too much information about the 2talk SMS service like;
- Does it work for ported numbers?
- Does it support sending to short codes?
- Is there any other way to send/receive besides using the 2talk Connect app?

Thanks

It just works like any other mobile number would. So you can send from the 2Talk app and it will send a SMS to any mobile number you like.
If you send it from a regional number (ie a ported local number) it modifies the number to be an 028 number. However, people can reply to this fictitious number and it will come back to the softphone that the regional number is connected to.

Txts cost 23c. Maybe they are included in the bundles. Not too sure. Only use Go Free for my personal account.

Is it possible to login to the app using one of my secondary lines? (I've tried just using another number as the login with the same password but doesn't work).

It doesn't seem to support sending to SMS sort codes unless there's some special way you need to format the number?

I'm not sure what sort of codes you are sending? Never really used the app for texting.

You can register any number you like to the softphone app as long as it's on your 2Talk account. Maybe you have the line isolated in your Line Manager with a different password?
It is easy to check if you have the correct number and password by just using it to log in to 2Talk Live. If you can log in with the number/password combo it will register on the softphone.

Thanks, I tried again and turns out I can actually log in to the app (and 2talk Live) using another number and my main password.

I logged in with a regional number and sent an sms but the sender ID was set to my main 028 number.

I wonder if I port my 021 number to 2talk if I'll be able to send/receive sms?

According to 2talk you can't port mobile numbers to them and SMS to/from short codes are not supported.

The "2talk Reseller Training Webinar" has some good information about there services (but doesn't touch on SMS): http://youtu.be/x2BP1cOj0hA

Does anyone know of any other telcos that can provide virtual mobile numbers (voice and sms)?

Or failing that are there any email-to-[nz]sms providers that "just work" like Google Voice?

i.e.
- Don't truncate messages at char limits
- Automatically strip quoted reply email
- Handle HTML emails
- Support sending to and receiving from short codes
