Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with getting VOIP calls via a web browser? Specifically looking for a browser widget that can be embedded into our own web application (or web based CRM) that works with an NZ provider (like WXC or 2talk). 

We have been using Twilio for a little while and when it works its great - but, quite often we get dropped calls and call delays (most probably due to the servers being in the USA).

I've got phone app for 2talk working. Which also works ok. But I need something that works via the browser.  

Looking to try to hook this up locally and have got a little stumped. 

Any ideas?

I havent looked at them too hard - but googling sip voip browser plugin brought up a few possibilities.
Maybe something like these:

In all honestly my advice is to forget it. It's not going to happen (yet)

The only solution for browser based support is WebRTC, but you've got limited browser support for that and you're not (easily) going to be able to integrate it into a WxC or 2talk. Integrating it into your own backend product such as Asterisk 12 or 11 with WebRTC support will  work fine.

Ahh really - in the too hard basket a... 

If you *were* going to integrate WebRTC and 2talk - where would you start? I see there is an open source sip webRTC client here http://sipml5.org/

2talk would need to support WebRTC.

WebRTC is the future of voice, but what you want to do is something that was never really possible in the past without overcoming a lot of issues. WebRTC solves all of these, but it's not going to deliver a solid solution for you right now in the way you want to use it.

In the latest release of FreePBX they have re-designed the "User Panel" to include a WebRTC phone.

Can't say if it works well or not reliably but I do know it can make calls. Haven't tested much at all so if Steve says there is limited support for it so far than I guess there is your answer - I tend to think he knows what he's on about

The new FreePBX User Panel is cool. At FreePBX world last month there are some good plans for expanding this, particularly around the WebRTC support since this is now working well.

So FreePBX is software we will need to install on our own server by the looks of it (which supports WebRTC... ). 

So am I correct in assuming this gets around the '2talk not supporting WebRTC'.. as we will have our own server offering the WebRTC interface via FreePBX (which in turn will be communicating to 2talk via SIP)..?

If so - does it matter which provider I go with? WXC or 2talk?

yes you are on the right track. once you have your freepbx based asterisk server connected to an itsp like 2talk or even the pstn for that matter and then available to your web client then you are away. If you go with 2talk sip or iax, you have to accept that their support might not be the best for you, otherwise try someone else like wxc etc.

FreePBX is a full on PABX platform and will run stand-alone on a server. FreePBX started out as just being a GUI for Asterisk but now it is much much more than just a GUI (although I guess some could argue it still is essentially just a GUI).

You will configure your Extensions and then configure your Trunks. So you could use any provider, 2Talk, WxC or even a PSTN provider (if you had analogue cards in your FreePBX server). FreePBX has a module called "User Manager" which they have now redesigned to include a WebRTC phone - this module needs to be configured too but is integrated in to the Extensions module.

While it is relatively simple to run up a FreePBX server (the official distro makes this very very easy) I woul suggest you get someone who knows PABX's and SIP to do this. It looks simple on the surface but to get things working well and, more importantly, keeping stuff secure is far from simple if you have limited phone system knowledge.
