I have upgraded to VDSL recently to Orcon Genius and now I need to have my fax machines work as well. I have phoned Orcon and they can't help me, phoned Vodafone and Callplus and they want $100 to install and $40 per a month, which I think is a little high just for a fax line. So I have a phone line already, there is just nothing on the line as my plan has VOIP.

Does anyone know of someone who can provide me a fax line for cheap?.

For incoming, outgoing or both?

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
I install - Naked DSL, DSL Master Splitters, VoIP, data cabling and general computer support for home and small business.
Rural Broadband RBI installer for Ultimate Broadband and Full Flavour

You need a Cisco SPA112 and set it up to do T38 faxing. 2Talk would be the cheapest option as with an 028 number you only pay for the calls you make. Otherwise you can get a local number for $6.90/month + call costs.

Im surprised Orcon don't support it over the Genius service.

Either use a fax to email service or a standard POTS line.

If the faxes are important use POTS.

Don't put Fax over VoIP - it really isn't reliable especially if faxing is important.

Vodafone use POTS with VDSL not VOIP so it would be just the VDSL + Homephone. I presume you're on a contract with Orcon so can't change everything over to them?

I thought fax machines went out with CRT TVs and telegrams - haven't seen one for ten years.
Silly question - why do you need a fax?

I needed one for a bit to sign something and send back. Stupid lawyer types say that is fine but a scanned pdf might have been photo shopped. I pointed out the stupidity of that and was told that faxes are the only option other than sending paper by courier.

I think they have got out of the 1980s finally.

Faxes still have legal status for historical reasons, and emails and PDFs can be faked (as can any printed document, for that matter).
The stupid thing is that faxes are of low print quality, and fax paper deteriorates rapidly with age.

Digital signatures are as legal as pen signatures since 2002. The law is caught up, now the lawyers need to catch up to the times.

It's not the law firms IME, it's the damn banks, only in the last 6 months have some banks started accepting documents as an email attachment.

With a good provider T.38 fax over VoIP is a 98% reliable solution.
