We're considering getting fixed line broadband again as well as or instead of fixed wireless (we were on ADSL in the past but performance ended up awful in our rural area). There has been a fairly recent VDSL upgrade for our cabinet but we are near the edge of the coverage area on the Chorus map so I'm not sure if the achievable connection would be worth it for our primary service in comparison with our wireless provider. Still, the cost margin of having a broadband + voip option isn't that much more than our PSTN line with Spark which seems to be increasing in cost fairly regularly and has lost the reminder call feature which we used regularly each day. We live in an area with patchy cell phone coverage and unreliable power, so a PSTN line has been an important part of having redundant options but with the way things are going it looks like it would be better to be proactive about moving away from PSTN. If we had a VOIP solution that could be used with multiple handsets and on different networks, that would give us some redundancy.

It looks like 2degrees could be a good option (would like a service that the non techie members of the family could contact for support if need be), I've seen talk from a few years ago that people have used it with a variety of soft phones. Is that still the case and do they get simultaneous ringing? This would be handy as our property has much wider WiFi coverage than our DECT handsets.

Any other suggestions gladly received though.

There is an Android Fritz app "Fritz!App Fon" that will connect to a FritzBox and do what you want.  Mine rings whenever the main phone wired to the box rings - the FritzBox has settings to control things like that.  I have also been able to set up other softphones on Android and have them work, but the Fritz app is good and integrates with the FritzBox without having to spend hours working out the correct settings, so try that first and see if you like it.  I presume that there is also a similar iphone app.

A useful side effect of having more that one phone connected to your FritzBox is that if someone calls while the main phone is in use, the app will ring and you can answer the call there.  The 2Degrees VOIP setup allows multiple calls (in or out) at the same time.

Thanks, that's useful info. The multiple calls feature would be helpful.
