I have to say it does look pretty good on first impression, the keyboard in the cover is something Apple must be thinking 'Aaagh, why didn't we do that?'

It looks good. But they didn't come with "and this will be available in stores from 30th June in the US, extending to another 20 countries by 31st August and to the rest of the world by 30th September".

By the time this is actually available in the US only, it will be too late.

Just wait, they will, and then sue Microsoft over it.

A tablet with "Surface" tech built in would be pretty cool though. Moreso if we had other devices that would work with it.

Wake me up when we have the Surface table from Hawaii Five-0 that can magically suck data off anything you put on top of it.

I have sucked beer off a table in my younger days if that counts?

The back flap to hold up the screen is a bit clunky. But if apple had thought of it, it would be cool. The screen is quite thick though.

Too late for what? (to compete in the tablet space? One could argue yesterday was too late for that ;-) )

I believe they have said the RT will be released alongside Windows 8 though and the Intel version 3 months after that. So the have made some commitments to timings... though the Windows 8 release date hasn't been set yet.

i like it mostly, but the keyboard would require a hard surface, you couldnt put it on your lap, it would be strong enough.

also when did windows change their logo? really dont like the new one...

Windows 8 has the new logo. There are quite a few companies that have similar logos. I don't know what was wrong with the old one really. I think windows 8 with the metro OS, should have been called 'surface' instead of windows, as that is a far better name. Windows is the desktop OS with all the 'windows'. The metro UI is really just a single window, or a 'surface'

Won't this be Microsoft's forth or fifth attempt at a "Tablet" computer ?

I seem to remember there was Pen Computing back in Windows 3.1, then Pen computing with Windows 95, then XP Tablet ....

You never know, if you keep throwing money at it maybe people will buy it this time .... ;-)

they cant really rename "Windows", its whatever knows, they would be throwing out all your goodwill if they did that.

i cant wait until they have one os all all their devices phone/tablet/pc (2 out of 3 now).  this is one thing i really doubt apple will ever do (or put off for a long long time...)

personally im wanting a padfone because of this, but would love to get a wp7 (their interface is really really really slick...)

Interesting to see what connectivity options the device offers.
And if it used this Technology http://www.tactustechnology.com/ on the keypad/cover it could be a winner.

But then to be a winner you gotta be able to actually get your hands on it..........

They could call it windows surface. But personally I am not a fan of the same OS being used for both touch screen devices (devices for consumption) and desktops (productivity PCs). When using windows 8 I never used the metro interface. And i am sure if I was using it as a touch screen device, I many not use the windows interface much. The switching between the two is quite jarring, and some metro touch screen settings can only be done when in desktop mode. Apple haven't yet got both osx and ios OS's as part of the same os, and I am not sure if they have immediate plans to either.
