I'm hoping someone might have an idea that saves a full reinstall. My wife's laptop is just over two years old. I had a problem with it not booting while she was away a few weeks ago. When she returned and turned it on it worked. I used to be a relatively clued up amateur on computers till a stroke 5 years ago. But I hadn't done anything to the PC when it failed - just switched it on to run some regular maintenance. I simply mention this in case it gives any clues.

Yesterday (and today) it simply wouldn't complete bootup. It's OK in safe mode - including safe mode with networking. We've gone back to the previous restore point - and run the startup repair procedure - and run the check of C Drive - and run a memory check - all to no effect. Our C Drive used to have only Windows on it - but with Win7 it also has a few programs on it - they don't always allow a choice to install elsewhere (very unfriendly).

Currently we're running an Avast check (in safe mode) but really don't know where to go after that. We're getting closer to having to bite the bullet and do a full reinstall - but that takes some time to reinstall and reconfigure everything so we'e reluctant to do that. Thus any suggestions gratefully received.

Hi PhilANZ, what is the model and brand of laptop?

When you start in safe mode are there any interesting events in event log from the previous failed boot?

Have you tried the 'last known good' option in the startup menu?

We're not sure what's what in the event log - or even if we're in the right place looking at what events log - so can't say for sure - but there's nothing we can see that gives us any clues.

"Have you tried the 'last known good' option in the startup menu?"
We have reset to the last two "good" options with no joy.

You can try going into safe mode and removing the display drivers and restarting.

If that fails, remove the display drivers and then install the latest from the motherboard manufacturer available here before restarting:

Another good option is enabling boot logging from the start up menu. Takes ages to boot but logs every step.

Wait a while after the failure then boot into safe mode and find ntbtlog.txt & post the last 10 lines here.

Very weird - uninstalled AVAST then dowloaded and reinstalled it and all seems (fingers crossed) to be working normally again. Avast had trouble finding locale files - but that seemed to go away. Chrome is saying the same so we're reinstalling it too and seeing what happens.

So thanks for the helpful suggestions - we'll try and install the new video drivers at some stage and see what that does as well. Not totally comfortable with what has happened - but then I'm never comfortable when running MS ware.

I use the SMART check on the Hirens disk.

Alternitivly you could yese the HDD manufacturers tools.
