Malboo: Well upgraded to Win 8 20 minutes to download wow fast not a clean install did it over Win 7 had no problem took a couple of hours had same problem with the @ key so changed my keyboard to NZ English after finding the @ key all fixed, ATI Catalyst error on start ups so reinstalled drivers for it still no good couldn't see it causing it any problems so have left it for now and ticked the don't show this message again will fix at a later date hopefully.
Downloaded Classic Start Menu awesome free program now have my start menu back until I get used to Win 8 but I now have the best of both worlds Win 7desktop and Win 8 metro .
Downloaded Windows Media Center key took about 5 minutes to receive so I can watch Freeview at work plugged in usb stick TV tuner, tuned in the programs using WMC as software that my Pinnacle tuner came with never really worked no problem always tune with WMC and better picture so now I'm a happy chappy oh while I was at it finally got round to Partitioning hard drive using EaseUS Partition Master 9.1.1 Home Edition then used Windows Disk Manager to format unallocated space so now have photos and music movies on G: drive so if I format my hard-drive if Win 8 crashes or I uninstall it everything I don't have to move anything,it,s all backed on another drive anyway.
:)
mattwnz: One interesting thing I heard about windows 8 metro interface, and why it is being installed on non touch enabled devices with no option to go back to the start menu, is because Microsoft are using it as a form of advertising by association. This is one reason they could be selling windows 8 at low upgrade prices for windows xp users, compared to previous versions, just to get it out there and onto peoples PCs. As it is a similar looking interface on the phone and tablets, your average person with it on their desktop are then more likely to then buy windows phones, tablets and future devices, because it is a familar looking interface and they don't need to learn something different. Phones and tablets are then where they would make their large margins on. Quite clever of them.

Like a Halo effect?
If people hate it then they might buy an iPad and then a Mac.

Can you give details on Classic Start Menu? I googled but nothing except generic responses came up rather than the specific Classic Start Menu you referred to. Tks

Google "Classic Shell" - that's the programme that has the start menu (you can choose from classic, XP, or Win 7 menus) plus a couple of other items, like classic Explorer. I've just installed it and it's great.
linw:
But my W8 setup has a problem as IE just doesn't run. Tried in safe mode but still no-go. Also tried removing and re-adding IE but that had no effect, either. The event viewer says the offending module is ntdll.dll. Can't find anything to help with this so will have to keep looking. Would like to re-install IE10 but can't find a way of doing this.

teamsteve: I specifically asked if the boxed copy I was ordering would be able to be installed on my machine which doesn't have a previous version of Windows on it and was told "Yes you will be able to install it on your macbook as it’s a full version not an upgrade."
But when I try to active it I get this message...
... boo :(
billgates: ^ install windows 8 release preview and then do a clean install after :-)
