One interesting thing I heard about windows 8 metro interface, and why it is being installed on non touch enabled devices with no option to go back to the start menu, is because Microsoft are using it as a form of advertising by association. This is one reason they could be selling windows 8 at low upgrade prices for windows xp users, compared to previous versions, just to get it out there and onto peoples PCs. As it is a similar looking interface on the phone and tablets, your average person with it on their desktop are then more likely to then buy windows phones, tablets and future devices, because it is a familar looking interface and they don't need to learn something different. Phones and tablets are then where they would make their large margins on. Quite clever of them.

Malboo: Well upgraded to Win 8 20 minutes to download wow fast  not a clean install did it over Win 7 had no problem took a couple of hours had same problem with the @ key so changed my keyboard to NZ English after finding the @ key  all fixed, ATI Catalyst error on start ups so reinstalled drivers for it still no good couldn't see it causing it any problems so have left it for now and ticked the don't show this message again will fix at a later date hopefully.
Downloaded Classic Start Menu awesome free program now have my start menu back until I get used to Win 8 but I now have the best of both worlds Win 7desktop  and Win 8 metro .
Downloaded Windows Media Center key took about 5 minutes to receive  so I can watch Freeview at work plugged in usb stick TV tuner, tuned in the programs using WMC as software that my Pinnacle tuner came with never really worked no problem always tune  with WMC and better picture so now I'm a happy chappy oh while I was at it finally got round to Partitioning hard drive using EaseUS Partition Master 9.1.1 Home Edition then used Windows Disk Manager to format unallocated space so now have photos and music movies on G: drive so if I format my  hard-drive if Win 8 crashes or I uninstall it everything I don't have to move anything,it,s all backed on another drive anyway.

:)

Hi Malboo

Can you give details on Classic Start Menu? I googled but nothing except generic responses came up rather than the specific Classic Start Menu you referred to. Tks

Like a Halo effect?

If people hate it then they might buy an iPad and then a Mac.

I hate the metro interface, it's a tablet and phone os on a desktop, NONONONONONONONONO!

I'd get a mac, but they are so expensive  so ill just stick with windows 7 for now, that $50 upgrade to a legal OS is pretty atractive, but i just don't like windows 8, witch is pretty annoying.

all i can hope for is that windows 8 service pack 1 or windows 9 will be better.

Google "Classic Shell" - that's the programme that has the start menu (you can choose from classic, XP, or Win 7 menus) plus a couple of other items, like classic Explorer. I've just installed it and it's great.

@Oliver. Thanks for the detail on the 32/64 issue.

I had the "/@ issue as well but after a reboot all was well.

WMC installed and looks OK.

But my W8 setup has a problem as IE just doesn't run. Tried in safe mode but still no-go. Also tried removing and re-adding IE but that had no effect, either. The event viewer says the offending module is ntdll.dll. Can't find anything to help with this so will have to keep looking. Would like to re-install IE10 but can't find a way of doing this.

Otherwise things look good except there are no drivers for my old Canon S750 printer. Hardly use it but can move it to an older PC.

Maybe try the "Refresh your PC" feature?  It's maybe a bit brute force if you're only having trouble with IE but you can get to it by hitting windows key - enter "refresh" then under settings.

EDIT: More details of refresh and recimg:

Is it only IE you're having issues with?  Or all metro apps. I had issues with metro apps and found that my version of Avast was out of date - apparently it was blocking all network access for metro apps so they would close almost immediately on trying to open them.  An update of avast fixed that.

I installed twice on a laptop to be able to activate it and all went well. Took 45 minutes doing twice.   Another identical laptop I did an upgrade and it  took 1 hour 10 minutes.  BUT it changed the keyboard to UK keyboard.
The only other problem is using Internet Explorer and affects only the geekzone site.  It says cant connect. The troubleshooter comes up and I run that, it says cant find a problem. I close it, and then geekzone loads.  Not sure why it only happens on geekzone.

I also have a canon mp640 printer and all works well on the laptop I did an upgrade on.   On the clean install I cant install the same disk.   I have to use the printer driver Windows 8 supplied but the scanner side doesn't work.  The windows advisor say a paid alternative is available.   Next step is to try installing again with compatability mode.  I assume there is still that mode with Windows 8, will look this afternoon.  But so far pleased with Windows 8.

Was just reading an Ars article, and someone happened to mention Start8 by Stardock to bring back a Classic style start menu.

It's not free (at US$4.99), but it's not going to break the bank either.

Might be worth a look for people wanting the Classic style start menu back.

teamsteve: I specifically asked if the boxed copy I was ordering would be able to be installed on my machine which doesn't have a previous version of Windows on it and was told "Yes you will be able to install it on your macbook as it’s a full version not an upgrade."

But when I try to active it I get this message...

... boo :(

billgates: ^ install windows 8 release preview and then do a clean install after :-)

This worked!

I installed the release preview, and then ran the upgrade as an upgrade and it looks to me like I now have a full and activated Windows 8

Thanks billgates :)
