I have been around since the days of DOS on the PC and before that C64C's and Amiga's.

Best OS and machine I've used would have to be the Amiga. (Still is, pats accelerated A1200)

But I do love Windows 8. Once I've unlearnt some legacy habits it's very natural and easy to find stuff :-) My 5 year old son jumped on and he's away.

Boot time is great and for the older stuff the desktop is still there :-)

martyyn: If you love windows 7 then stick with it.
If there's problems from the more computer-knowledgeable folk, then I dread my (not so knowledgeable) relations' next computer upgrade and they are forced into Windows 8, Windows 7 won't even be a choice.

True, hadn't even gone that far but yeah, there's a storm coming there one day! Frown

Well i have a pic of lake Kanarie on mine, and only the folders I need. http://xmb.stuffucanuse.com/xmb/image.php?&aid=3460&my-win8-desktop.jpg

You're doing it wrong, the Start screen is ONLY for when you want to start a program. otherwise you have the usual screen to use.

Chainsaw:
netspanner: You can move them, group them with names, delete them, all you can't do is change the text and color. beat that in W7,
So easy - I have nothing on my desktop except a photo of mine that i want to see all of. Beaten. No text or colour. Wink

martyyn: So is it the fault of Microsoft ? Or the human who wont read a manual ?

gzt: Windows 8 jumps the shark attempting to combine a desktop and tablet UI. In one way this amazing feat of shark jumping is impressive. But from a user perspective it is why the $*#& would I want to jump a shark?

Everyone at Microsoft must have known this was coming and discussed it to some extent, but when this guy decides strategy there is not much intelligent discussion beyond a certain point:

Jaxson:Damn!, Tom Cruise moment anyone?

What's the difference between Tom Cruise and Steve Ballmer?

If Steve Ballmer wanted to convince you he was in love with Katie Holmes he would have thrown the whole damn couch across the room.

Well I just bought a new laptop and it has Win 8 pre installed. Booted it up, set it up etc then got to the Win 8 UI. I was/still am confused. There is all these tiles there that I probably will never use, I like the "Normal" "old fashioned" way of Win 7 and previous versions. Hopefully soon I will grow to like Win 8.

Right click on a tile you don't want a little tick appears on it, then go "Unpin from Start" to remove it.

Drag your tiles around to make groups, I have the most used programs first.

Right click anywhere not on a tile to see all the apps, and then chose any tiles you want to add.

Its great, you can make groups of programs you use. (there is a screenshot of my system on an earlier page here that gives an idea of how it looks)

Then go to the bottom right corner and click on the small - hyphen in a box, that shows all the start page in a group structure so you can name them, click on a group and name it.

Hope this helps.

Toggle between start and desktop with the windows key, or bottom left.

If a program starts in full screen you turn if off by clicking on the top of it and dragging it down till it shrinks away.

You can run some full screen programs in on the desktop like IE 10 by choosing the option from the spanner on the bottom task bar (right click I think to get it)

Just use the win 8 desktop like Win 7 and when you want to open a program use the Start page. No real difference to win7 really.

Hope this helps.

Funny. I now seem to have two versions of Skype. If I start Skype from the metro start screen it starts the metro version. If I start it from the desktop it starts the normal version which does not take over my monitor.

Plenty to not like. But then I enjoy the faster speed etc. After using metro now for a while I have come to the conclution that I hate it. But overall windows 8 is still better than windows 7 and thats why I will stick with it. With the classic shell of cource :-p

Despite what I had heard and read, and despite claiming I would not upgrade, I went ahead with the $50 option. Good value, right? Wrong. There's a reason Microsoft priced this version of Windows so low this time around: we would never upgrade and buy into this tile crap otherwise. I am unhappy with the UI changes almost entirely. The only perks I'm seeing over W7 are the file copy utility and baked in virtual discs. Minor conveniences when compared with what I consider a train wreck. I'm not alone. This sentiment is shared by almost everyone I've spoken to. The UI is GREAT when used on a tablet, but forcing mice users to drag all over the *ucking screen just to, say, connect to a wifi point is absurd. The metro apps have zero utility for desktop users, as they force full screen and are extremely option limited. The tiles are a pretty waste of time. Far less practical than simple desktop shortcuts. Forcing us to open a separate UI just to open start menu apps is, I'm sorry, just ridiculous.

This is a clear case of trying to force desktop users to adopt a new UI focused around tablets. Surely it would not have been that hard to allow us to use a more sensible desktop version. I suppose they gambled that most users would just grin and bear it. Sadly that's what I'm doing.

Interesting new infographic from Pokki – Windows 8 Start Menu statistics

So, if you’re Microsoft, surely there’s a point when you realize that this is ridiculous?I haven’t been shy about saying that the absence of  a start menu and the insistence on making users deal with the start screen are hands down two of the biggest problems with Windows 8.

Company after company continues to offer patches and fixes to these problems and still Microsoft seem to ignore these issues.

While a good rant is always worthwhile when you know what you are talking about, it can prove embarrassing when all it does is show that you do not know what you are doing.

Because, for the example you give of connecting to a wifi point, it is actually as simple as clicking on the network notification icon on the taskbar and selecting the network, modem or wifi point you want.

Well, if the ranting poster hasn't been able to work out how to get to the Desktop taskbar from a Metro app,  without dragging the mouse "all over the *ucking screen just to, say, connect to a wifi point", and especially so after reading this thread, then he really is a lost cause and has only himself to blame.

Sure, I can press the windows key first. Why the extra step? It's a minor inconvenience, but they all add up in W8. But then when I click on the wifi symbol on the task bar, instead of a neat window popping up close to my mouse pointer (you know, what would be logical and time saving), a large menu moves in from the right, stealing focus and preventing me from clicking anywhere else. Then I have to drag all the way to the top of the screen in order to select my network. On the plus side, my right arm is sure getting a good work out.
