Chainsaw:martyyn: If you love windows 7 then stick with it.If there's problems from the more computer-knowledgeable folk, then I dread my (not so knowledgeable) relations' next computer upgrade and they are forced into Windows 8, Windows 7 won't even be a choice.
Chainsaw:netspanner: You can move them, group them with names, delete them, all you can't do is change the text and color. beat that in W7,So easy - I have nothing on my desktop except a photo of mine that i want to see all of. Beaten. No text or colour.
martyyn: So is it the fault of Microsoft ? Or the human who wont read a manual ?
gzt: Windows 8 jumps the shark attempting to combine a desktop and tablet UI. In one way this amazing feat of shark jumping is impressive. But from a user perspective it is why the $*#& would I want to jump a shark?
Everyone at Microsoft must have known this was coming and discussed it to some extent, but when this guy decides strategy there is not much intelligent discussion beyond a certain point:
Jaxson:Damn!, Tom Cruise moment anyone?
netspanner: Right click on a tile you don't want a little tick appears on it, then go "Unpin from Start" to remove it.
Drag your tiles around to make groups, I have the most used programs first.
Right click anywhere not on a tile to see all the apps, and then chose any tiles you want to add.
Its great, you can make groups of programs you use. (there is a screenshot of my system on an earlier page here that gives an idea of how it looks)
Then go to the bottom right corner and click on the small - hyphen in a box, that shows all the start page in a group structure so you can name them, click on a group and name it.
Hope this helps.
Toggle between start and desktop with the windows key, or bottom left.
If a program starts in full screen you turn if off by clicking on the top of it and dragging it down till it shrinks away.
You can run some full screen programs in on the desktop like IE 10 by choosing the option from the spanner on the bottom task bar (right click I think to get it)
Just use the win 8 desktop like Win 7 and when you want to open a program use the Start page. No real difference to win7 really.
Hope this helps.
So, if you’re Microsoft, surely there’s a point when you realize that this is ridiculous?I haven’t been shy about saying that the absence of a start menu and the insistence on making users deal with the start screen are hands down two of the biggest problems with Windows 8.
Company after company continues to offer patches and fixes to these problems and still Microsoft seem to ignore these issues.
GBristow: ...The UI is GREAT when used on a tablet, but forcing mice users to drag all over the *ucking screen just to, say, connect to a wifi point is absurd...

While a good rant is always worthwhile when you know what you are talking about, it can prove embarrassing when all it does is show that you do not know what you are doing.
Because, for the example you give of connecting to a wifi point, it is actually as simple as clicking on the network notification icon on the taskbar and selecting the network, modem or wifi point you want.
BraaiGuy:
...I think you missing the point ...
There is no taskbar in Metro :-p
