Went looking for a sidebar gadget only to be told I need to get windows 8! Way to push the new OS Microsoft.

BTW: This is not another windows 8 hate rant, I just thought it was funny.

Yes it does suck, as gadgets have only been in windows since vista, and I find them very useful. But supposedly they are a security risk, although I don't see how they are really much different from apps in metro and any security holes should be able to be fixed. But it shows that they are probably depreciating the desktop in future versions of windows, and they would prefer you to use metro for your desktop homescreen

They actually started removing the gadget site well before the Windows 8 Release..
Seems many of the gadgets are still available here:

Windows Gadgets have been removed from Windows 7 during a security update. Basically they are javascripts and have total access to the computer.

It's not a push to Windows 8, it's a security risk.

Wow, did not know that. Cheers Freitism. Considering how much of a security threat java seems to be, it is probably a good thing to get away from then.

Nothing by microsoft in the top 10 according to kaspersky, but flash and java dominate the list.
