By the way, your comment on Twitter about the Intel video driver: I did not install it, the ISO installer did. I hope the driver/firmware update pack got that right now.

freitasm: I will reset this Surface tonight and install it later to try.

shouldn't need to do a refresh, it will upgrade over existing

also if the base language install of your machine is not EN US language you'll need to wait a few more days for the upgrade to install.

I did an install over the refreshed machine because I wanted to get the Skydrive "offline" thing right from the start, with nothing else to mess with the files. Because, really, what good is a Surface if not using the Microsoft account, surely?

And the "Modern UI" Mail app still doesn't hyperlink URLs in text emails, like Outlook does. So off to install Outlook 2013 now.

the email thing is a known issue, I know its a pain, I have it myself.  it is being fixed

reinstalling the OS over top shouldn't have needed to refresh

in the Windows 8.1 Preview you need to actually login with a Microsoft Account, the local account support isn't there in this Preview build currently

Microsoft pulled a Windows Phone on this one... When pulling the Search charm on Windows 8 Store it would search the store. Now it searches the computer and web, but not inside the apps.

Well as a variation to that, I had the same problem and was about to revert, but I put in my work email address rather than my MS one and it told me it wasn't valid and asked me if I wanted to use an existing account which it did. It also retained all my programs and settings. I was surprised since apparently the final release won't keep your programs! Surprising to me they can do it on a preview but not the RTM. I upgraded my W7 to W8 RTM without any issues.

I know it's a Preview build but I was surprised how laggy 8.1 feels.

Ha ha ha wondered when you might bring this up, I was reading the thread and seeing the building frustration.

Also very interesting that Nathan makes the statement that a Microsoft Surface doesn't get any special treatment in terms of bundled drivers.

This is the problem with an OS to suit lots of manufacturers, they can't afford to do it better for themselves, which makes the user experience worse when a user should expect more from Microsoft branded hardware.

freitasm: I don't feel it laggy. I noticed the Windows Experience Index is gone though.

Maybe it will "settle down". I haven't checked it today. Windows Search Process seemed very busy.

Honestly I'm not sure this is a fair comment

Normal users aren't going to reinstall their OS from a Windows 8.1 Preview ISO image

They will use a USB recovery key, or they will upgrade their Surface Pro to Windows 8.1 using the upgrade installer

I have said the experience would be worse for Surface owners doing what Freitasm has done. Why is this not fair? Would it be better having the drivers bundled? I think so.

Therefore I think you have misrepresented or misunderstood my perspective.

I believe your perspective is that doing this is hard because it is an edge case and therefore isn't catered to (hence the comments about usb drives and upgrades). This is different to my perspective that having this process for anyone is worse (which leads to my point about you needing to weigh the pro's and con's).

How much of an edge case this is I don't know, but ultimately to answer that question we would need to understand the demographics and technical capabilities of people buying the product (therefore their expectations that the edge case should be catered to).

Using our sample size of one, this appears to be an issue. I would admit that this is more likely to be an issue for developers, who want to starting testing against this preview, but it is worth considering that a great man said the success of a platform relies on "developers, developers, developers"

if you put drivers in the ISO it will be immediately out of date

then all the other OEMs complain and suddenly you cant fit Windows onto a DVD

the recovery image is already on the Surface Pro, so you can reset or refresh the device from in Windows, or use the utility to create a USB key to restore factory image from bare metal.

if something hurts by installing off the ISO why do it?

am i missing something

I didn't say it hurt to install from the ISO. It was a strange decision to release a preview with limited availability. As if Microsoft didn't know people would want to install.

And seeing the ISO is a temporary thing adding the Sueface drivers as they are Microsoft's own wouldn't hurt.

Why make it easier if some can make it harder, right?

The new menu is a lot better. The Skydive integration is a lot better, how it should've been on first release.

Great feedback

but is it a good use of resources when there is a single Surface Pro Driver Pack you can download
