... I don't think wdidle3 should/would have caused that, I could be wrong. I wonder if you have a much bigger issue.

maybe I should wipe the whole thing and start anew.  Have drive scanner and drive pool.   WD Diagnostics passes all disks.   Drive pool will not add any drives for the pool as they are dynamic.  I go to disk management and the disks show as dynamic but the volume as simple.  I never made them dynamic to start with but looks like will have to wipe everything and try and convert disk to simple rather than just the volume being simple.

Scanner doesn't show any problems with the disks?

I didn't know about dynamic disks but it appears you are correct... perhaps they're a requirement of raid, I really have no clue on that one.

Starting fresh isn't great, but it looks like it might be the best option.

that disk WHS2011 showed failure but wd diagnostics passed all tests, I have just managed to add it to the pool. BUT drive pool lists it as damaged even though it passed WD tests.  They must pick something up that WD tests dont

just thought, not sure which but 2 are around 3 years old.   Now I do have full backup on another windows 8 computer and also on a Netgear readynas 104.  the 104 has 2 2TB drives and 2 3TB drives which of course act as 2TB drives.  These are only a couple of months old.  File copies to the readynas stop alot and takes a while copying over thats why I only use it as backup.  Maybe I should take those drives out and use them in the server and the best from the server into the NAS.  Start from scratch.  Using drivepool should use the 3TB drives I would think

There is a chance the readynas doesn't like the advanced format 3TB drives, WHS2011 doesn't have an issue with them, and neither does drivepool.

If there really is an issue with those drives, it's probably better they're not used in a system that matters.

scanner still shows as waiting to scan.  But when added drivepool lists as damaged.  Will be a while by looks before scanner will scan as its taken hour and half scanning 2 disks and hasnt finished those yet

well all finished scanning.  3 disks passed but this one came up 62 sectors unable to be read.  WD diagnostics passed the disk with all tests and smart doesnt show errors.  WHS kicked it out of array and now stablebit scanner found 62 sectors. So one disk for scrap I guess.
Will start rebuilding system today.
Had thought about whether to try Freenas or Windows server 2012.  Have tried Windows 8 as server but overall prefer WHS 2011 and will be even better now with stablebit.

Thank You for the help and advice. Very appreciated

Don't destroy the disk just yet (don't use it either though), I'll ask about that at WGS, I get the feeling there could be a solution to its unreadable sectors.

Also, its a good idea to change your pool letter/s to something high, P: or X: are common options. It stops the pool letter being changed accidently by the OS and messing with share access. Its a PITA if it happens, but fairly easy to fix.

And finally a question, have you got a server backup setup? It is totally worth having. Rather than reinstall the OS when something goes wrong, you can just restore a backup. It takes me about 30 mins mostly unattended to restore my system SSD.

was thinking about the OS backup.  I have it on the system but a separate disk.  Have been thinking probably should put a backup on another disk not in the same box even though it is separate

Just an update.  I bought both stablebit scanner and drivepool.  replaced the drive with the errors and was very easy to setup drivepool. I experimented adding and removing.  Really like it.  Now time will tell.   I hummed and ahhed which version to get and settled on version 1 rather than version 2  for now. Integrates nicely with WHS 2011.
Thanks for the help and advice

My OS backup disk is an external one, mostly because it's easy to identify.
It's actually possible to have multiple backup disks so you can rotate them and keep one or more off site. You just need to make sure you have all the disks you want to use connected when you setup or alter the backup settings.

I really do love DrivePool (if you hadn't noticed), it's so forgiving and so easy to use. If I need to identify a disk, I've been known to just start pulling disks to see which one disappears from the pool. DrivePool doesn't care as long as you reconnect it.

I'm still running the v1.x for now. It is fairly easy to upgrade to the v2.x, and if you don't like it you can downgrade again.

One thing to be aware of, only because it catches people out sometimes. If a disk drops out of the pool, either because you yank it or because the disk fails, the pool goes read only until either the disk comes back or you tell it to remove the disk. It's a data protection feature.

my server os backup is a dedicated drive in the server itself.   I actually pulled all the disks out and wrote down serial numbers and then numbered all the drive bays.  Then I fitted each drive and noted which drive is in which bay to make it easier in future of drive failure.  But so far I am sold on drivepool.

So I have an answer on the "bad" disk.

It appears that unreadable sectors, actually relates to errors in the file system rather than the disk surface. That disk should be totally usable once fixed.

The easiest way to clean it up is probably to format the disk, and/or recreate the partition.

Here's the reply if you want to have look.
