if you have a samsung laptop model NP350V5C-S09AU i would not upgrade it to win 8.1 yet. this laptop has two video cards,  a low power intel & a radon for gaming. the drivers that win 8.1 users don't cope with the 2 cards.
tried reinstalling the win 8.0 drivers, but any program that tries to use the radon card just crashes.
win 8.1 is running fine but can't use the laptop for games etc, until samsung release updated drivers.

also upgraded a desktop & 3 laptops with out any problems. the oldest laptop took about 3-4 hours & the pc about 1 hour

please run DXDIAG and send me a copy of the log file it generates and I'll find out what drivers you should be using

Microsoft NZ you really need to make it cheap or a free upgrade from Windows 7 aswell. You want people to use the new OS. Its too expensive Im 16 I cant afford it. This is the reason people pirate!   I dont see why people shouldnt be allowed to swap their windows 7 licence to a windows 8 one?
they need to make money so can develop more through research and development etc and improve Windows for you as well. No need to give it for free.
To make another analogy. You make and sell a nice car. Then a year later you bring out an improved version, you wont just give it to those who bought your previous car.
I started with Atari 400 thento Amiga then PC.  I had MS DOS then Windows 3.1, Windows 95A, 95B, 08,98se, ME,XP,Vista, 7 and now 8 and 8.1.  Only one I havent had to pay for is this Windows 8.1. I think it is fair of Microsoft doing that.  They have to survive. No reason to pirate it.  If you are 16 and have 7 and say cant afford Windows 8 then save a bit each week until you can. Then you will have the pleasure of meeting a goal

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard  graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner,  Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

Not entirely correct. Windows RT 8.1 has been removed. Windows 8.1 is so available

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

MaxLV:
What about those users who have slow connections and limited data caps?  How are they going to get the update? Very slowly, and possibly having to pay their ISP for exceeding their data caps.

No, Microsoft should have had more distribution channels for this update than just the Online store...

What Microsoft are doing is no different to any other vendor. iOS updates mean a user has to download the update individually for every device.

I seriously can't believe you think the initial $50 for an update from Windows7 to Windows8 was too expensive.

If you got in early (before the loophole was closed) you could even upgrade for $19.99

Your justification for pirating software because you think this pricing is "expensive" is pretty lame.

This logic doesn't stack up, everyone knows you already have a Veyron :)

I wasnt saying I did pirate. . Im still on 7 but have evaluation installed. I just think $200 or whatever it is is too expensive. Unfortunately I missed out on that offer and I believe it was only for machines purchased after June 2012. Mine was boxing day. It would be great to see an offer like this again since they are calling 8.1 a new Operating system, apples upgrades are much more affordable

So you have the evaluation version of Windows 7 running?

Initial upgrade pricing was for everybody, it didn't matter what OS you had or when you purchased it.

If you have a full version of Windows 7 it's going to cost you $89.95 maximum to upgrade to 8.1

As he said, he missed the initial promotion, and is simply expressing his opinion (one shared by plenty of people) that $200 is expensive to upgrade.)

Not entirely what loophole you are talking about but I purchased 5 copies for $19.99 based on five different redemption codes Microsoft sent to my various e-mail accounts. Only installed one so far since I wasn't sure I would like it.

At work I have been using it on a Toshiba Z10T Ultrabook tablet with two screens with Windows 8 Pro. I have the desktop showing on both screens and rarely if ever have to use my finger. It works pretty well except for one major omission for me. The search (activated from Windows 7 by putting an item in the search box and then choosing See More Results, does not search Outlook. That's very annoying.

Back OT Windows 8.1 did not originally show up in the Store for me until I applied a KB (for some reason Windows Updates are not happening on my machine). Then I had to take the machine off the corporate network, connect to our separate WiFi network to get the download to load. Otherwise the "purchased" from the store just did not go through.

In the end the download and installation took about 90 minutes in all.

Not enough time with it to make any comments except there is a Start button but search still does not search Outlook.
