You can create a local account during setup, or after setup

I believe you are mistaken in that one can create a local account during the 8.1 upgrade setup.
At least, when I upgraded, the process is that it is mandatory to create an online account. It caused me some minor hassles as I was in a bit of a rush at the time and didn't expect this curveball.

But, you are right in that you can change this after setup.  So, it is just poor setup design rather than a cunning conspiracy to get people to use online accounts.

Disconnect from the Internet at this point of the upgrade then

nzrock: HI all

if you have a samsung laptop model NP350V5C-S09AU i would not upgrade it to win 8.1 yet. this laptop has two video cards,  a low power intel & a radon for gaming. the drivers that win 8.1 users don't cope with the 2 cards.
tried reinstalling the win 8.0 drivers, but any program that tries to use the radon card just crashes.
win 8.1 is running fine but can't use the laptop for games etc, until samsung release updated drivers.

also upgraded a desktop & 3 laptops with out any problems. the oldest laptop took about 3-4 hours & the pc about 1 hour

an update to the above

here is what samsung said when i asked them about win 8.1 support/drivers for my laptop.

`Thank you for your email Greg, we only support Win 8 at this stage. If drivers become available, they will be released through our web as well as through the Samsung SW update. '

so to be on the save side i would stick to win8.0

64-bit Windows 8.1 Update updated some drivers for my Lenovo laptop but nothing was likely to cause me major problems: power management, display and Microsoft Camera.

Updated my desktop. Took 87 min. Just a couple of things I have noticed so far.

Bit cheesed off that google toolbar and Last Pass won't run in IE11.

Other than those, seems to have done a good job of upgrading.

re lastpass, check out this microsoft answer - basically, disable the 'enhanced protection' in IE and it will work again (but your passwords will be less secure again!)

I hadn't used a ThinkPad for 10 years and I've been pleasantly surprised how good the 64-bit driver support is from Lenovo. Upgrades from Vista to 8 and now 8.1 have been seamless.

I did the upgrade on the weekend on a dual-boot (win 7 & 8) laptop. First reboot after the upgrade completed froze in black before the boot menu. I eventually discovered I could boot off a Win 8 install CD, abort the install and get into the boot menu on reboot, but had to do this every time I shut down. I ran bcdboot to point to the Win 8 Windows directory and it now wants my bitlocker key :( None of the saved keys match the ID it wants.

Kind of regretting doing the upgrade now...

Thanks, Regs, for the link. Hadn't got around to looking at solutions.

Nathan - sorry, should have said. It was the desktop version.

Unchecking Enhanced Protection gets both Google Toolbar and Last Pass back.

I've upgraded my desktop and HTPC to 8.1 now. I really like the changes and additions, but unfortunately a couple of niggles:

1) "Allow media streaming" has become disabled on my desktop and refuses to enable. I've tried a number of workarounds and it just won't do it. It's actually no issue for me, but ironically I was trying to show a friend how to share media from PC to xbox over the weekend, but because I had updated to 8.1 and that option is now disabled couldn't.

2) The USB IR receiver I was using with my HTPC (which is a quite old nasty "keyboard emulating" IR receiver, but worked OK with a Harmony remote) now refuses to work at all - when I unplug and plug it windows just says "Unrecognised device". A bit strange since it worked on Windows 8 but has just stopped since upgrading to 8.1.

Overall fairly small issues.

freitasm: I kept my HTPC running Windows 7 Media Center... It just works so that's one machine I am not touching.

Do you just use Freeview on that? or....
