Hi does anyone have an idea of why my Asus Transformer (tablet with detachable keyboard) running Windows 8.1 does not trigger the onscreen keyboard when physical keyboard is detached?

It recognises if the physical keyboard is attached coz it plays a sound when i attach/detach the thing.

When i boot, the keyboard triggers at the logon screen but does not in the desktop mode

I think it only does this (automatically opens) in modern ui\metro apps, not from the desktop or "traditional" windows programs - I've noticed the same thing. From desktop you have to manually tap it in taskbar.

yes as pointed out, this is expected. Its by design the OSK doesn't popup on the desktop, but does automatically in Modern apps. If you're using a browser etc, use Modern IE not the desktop, or click the keyboard button in taskbar.

I would have though there was a way of enabling it so it automatically appeared when you tapped in a text fled.  Especially with the office software, where they only open on desktop mode, even though they are supposedly made for touch screen devices. It's little things like that which shows that it has a long way to go yet before it can compete with ios and android.

I suspect it wouldn't be all that easy doing it "nicely"\consistently and in a friendly way in traditional programs with so many variations on how they're built\work. I can sort of understand them keeping it somewhat consistent - in modern apps auto open and in traditional programs always require user action to open it.

the other thing i don't understand is sleep ... if my tablet fails to sleep or wakes up by accident and ruins my battery life i'm gonna be so p!@@ed ...

and i hope windows sleep is better than android sleep.

ipad sleep - after 1 day 0% drain (all notification off). windows laptop sleep after 1 day you better charge it again = android (no notification).

windows tablet???

you've installed the Win32 version of Chrome onto Windows 8.1 desktop mode and it does this?

What do you click on in Chrome?

I've never seen Chrome do this on any Windows 8 or 8.1 touch screen machine

looks like that version is on the Chrome DEV channel which is why I don't see it on my release version

coding the OSK to come up is just an API that each app calls, Google must have updated Chrome to do this

Personally browsing I do with touch using Metro IE, where the OSK comes up automatically

I guess you must have opted into the dev channel previously or had ?extra=devchannel at the end or your download URL

the latest DEV release is 33.0.1750.5 http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.co.nz/2013/12/dev-channel-update_19.html

the latest Stable release, which doesn't have the OSK popup on desktop is 31.0.1650.63 http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.co.nz/2013/12/stable-channel-update.html
