I need to buy a single copy of Windows 7 or 8 to run under VMWare Fusion on OS X.

https://www.vmware.com/support/fusion/faq/prod_info.html#windows

What's the least expensive, legitimate way to get a copy?

Semi off topic...Fusion is crap, go for Parallels. Fusion lost the plot after v4.

Very off topic. We are not speaking of non genuine windows builds?

Really, we have quite a number of finance staff with Mac computers who have chosen Fusion over Parallels to run their windows only applications.

What in particular don't you like anymore?

Why would you buy a Mac, then run Windows on it? Are Mac's not cracked up to what they're meant to be?

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
I install - Naked DSL, DSL Master Splitters, VoIP, data cabling and general computer support for home and small business.

Speaking for myself, I'm running Windows on a VM on Mac for learning, family support, and product evaluation purposes. Same reasons for running another copy of OS X, plus Solaris 10, Solaris 11, various Linuxes, and the like.

However, I mostly use the Mac as a Mac. It does what it needs to very well.

I have a Mac for Xcode, and Windows on it for "everything else" TBH.

But seriously, Windows 8.1 retail is the cheapest you'll get. You aren't entitled to use OEM, so you can't use that.

Do you go to Uni or anything?

Hah I had a feeling I'd derail the thread when I posted that last night, sorry about that OP!

CoffeeBaron: Think of it more like this - with a Mac you get two computers in one - Mac OS and Windows OS. It lets you live in the Mac world, while still having a toe in the Windows world if you must (legacy or proprietary work application reasons for example).

Insane: I used VMware Fusion exclusively from it's release until version 3 from memory. It took them about 2 years to release a new version after that, and in the meantime Parallels went from strength to strength, overtaking VMware in performance of not only the guest OS but also the host OS. After that I tried VMware a few times and it just felt like it never caught back up to Parallels.

It's one of those arguments that can be as intense as the Mac vs PC one, but having used both for a long period of time and under heavy use cases I am confident that Parallels is the better choice for me and my Macs.

Nope, not off topic at all!

Got a single Windows app to run in an otherwise OS X environment on 1 machine - Fusion seemed to have better reviews recently than Parallels, but open to ideas...

I was also working on the assumption that an OEM version of Windows was a no go - needed to be retail.
