Word to the wise, We are getting nationwide reports from customers of one of the latest patch releases being deployed to W7 clients causing PCs to sit on 'Configuring Updates' at the 9-12% mark for anywhere between 2hrs and 2 days.

Experienced this on Friday on 2 clients myself, and the latest one I'm working on started to grind to a halt with pending updates, and although I hard-powered it has continued with the pending update tasks.

Either takes aaaages to complete. Or fails after a few attempts before re-queuing it.

Can't find any statement on the interwebs for the past week relating to it, but with the number of complaints and others I've spoken to seeing the same there's a fair chance it's common.

Wonder if thats what this laptop here was having issues with.... 2x got to 14% and just sat there.
I ended up booting into safe mode, then booted up normally again and everything seemed fine again.

Probably.

This sucker was on 9% for a good 40mins. It's since moved to 11% and been there for quite some time now.


Doesn't appear to be many official source whinges about it. Other than many IT guys going 'be ready to reboot and leave it overnight'

Well, my untouched beast has finally finished at 5:02. little over 3hrs. And approx. 5 reboots and continuing "Configuring Updates" processes later. Less than ideal for a corporate environment.

And logging in, it again tells me 28 updates to install. Looks to me like it has tried to install them, failed then reverted changes similar to a laptop last week after a number of retries. Now to find the logs..

Hmm.. Lots of update not found and other various errors all reported by forefront. Which happens to have an update sitting awaiting it too.

Just disabled, and retrying now to see if it plays nice.

Funny you should ask. On further investigation I'm finding this is a common one people are also starting to point the finger at. Along with IE11 rollup, and Silverlight.


Its still occuring on some other PCs now, tomorrow I'll be turning off all 3 and then trying individually

So update this morning:

Disable IE rollup, DotNet 2.5.1, forefront patches - no change.

Scanning the list of pending updates, Found an old Dec patch KB2887069 awaiting, turns out this caused what we were seeing during Dec/Jan. Stall at 12% and failure of all other installs.

I've just skipped that update. It again took about 40mins-an hr to update all the other pending, but during the reboot process the counter kept going to past 37%!!

Left it be. And after a while resumed windows, with all patches now successful.

So KB2887069 was causing the others to fail and requiring a number of attempt retries. However one of the Mar patches is still causing it to install VERY slowly
