Patch kb3023266 was installed three times (status: successful) already but windows update keeps wanting to install it. This happens occasionally, I have to hide the patches.

Anyone know why this happens? Surely they must test these things.

Have a look in the update history. It may be failing to install every time.

Or I could just hide it. Just curious why it does it, if anyone knows.

I think it is the bug that MS were irritated at Google for publicising a couple of days ago.

I read about that, Google makes vulnerabilities public 6 months after discovery. That seems fair, the bad guys may have discovered it already, it forces vendors to fix their software.

its 90 days

Google is irresponsible, they just wanted to throw Microsoft under the bus and get some sound bites.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/msrc/archive/2015/01/11/a-call-for-better-coordinated-vulnerability-disclosure.aspx

they knew the bug was being patched 2 days later, in our normal Patch Tuesday cycle, 2 days after their 90 day window, they were asked nicely to wait and they didn't

they shouldn't through stones in glass houses when there is almost 1 billion Android 4.3 devices that have a security vulnerability they won't fix

  • If the affected version [of WebView] is before 4.4, we generally do not develop the patches ourselves, but welcome patches with the report for consideration. Other than notifying OEMs, we will not be able to take action on any report that is affecting versions before 4.4 that are not accompanied with a patch.

They do test patches.  When an update keeps reinstalling it's not getting installed or it's not getting the flag set that it's fully installed.  Can you try manually installing the update from the download page?
