Wade: So my 4yo laptop running Win7 qualifies for a free upgrade to Win10 provided i upgrade within 12mths of Win10's release?

If so this is awesome news as i was questioning whether i save some dollars and recycle that license to my next desktop build or bite the bullet and buy Win8.1

A free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge

Impressive!!

I wonder how seamless this annual clean reinstall will be. Maybe they record your hardware on the internet ...

theres no annual clean reinstall

Will the next release test build of windows appear through the normal update function in W10 or will it be a ISO download as it was before?

I'm in the same boat with Media Centre, its the hub of our TV set up. We have an 8.1 PC with 3 Xbox 360's extending it to our TVs, and it just works so well. Hopefully MC is just included as it is with Win 10.

Have to say though I'm pretty damn impressed with what MS are doing with Win 10. Looks like they're finally pulling everything together nicely.

- Universal apps across phone, tablet, PC and Xbox
- Continuum (perfect for example when workers who have a tablet when mobile, then connect to a dock in the office and the UI adapts automatically)
- Streaming Xbox to other devices in the house
- Full Cortana integration
- Spartan Browser
- Crazy holographic stuff!

Its a long watch but I'd recommend watching the event in its entirety, they demo some pretty cool things. http://news.microsoft.com/windows10story/

Will machines like the Pipo X7 which have 8.1 on them be eligible under the proposed upgrade program?

Universal Apps get my tick as does the Xbox interaction. If all transpires as promised the Win 10 ecosystem is going to be very good. It will see me finally drop my iMac and will drop my Android phone as well.

We are excited too. And there is more yet to disclose at a future time before launch which will be pretty cool too. We haven't talked about everything yet, we like to keep some things up our sleeves to announce at the right moment.

The base version of windows 10 not just the 'pro' or 'enterprise' versions should get Bitlocker.

Personal uses like encrypting things these days, just look and Android and iOS

reven: What if I format my computer after the 12 months is up, do I still have the free upgrade? i.e. can I reinstall windows 10 then?

I think this is the number one question.  My surface pro came with windows 8, so to do a re-install I would need to install that and then go through all of the upgrades. Alternatively, there ought to be an option to create a CD/ISO and get a license key.

Edit:  I would also like to see phone capability built in the OS so I can make call from my laptop rather than having to carry around a phone.
