Hello
I restarted my Windows 8.1 laptop after applying updates and suddenly my logon password doesn't work. I tried to do a system restore but you need a password to do that and the logon password doesn't work

Do you have special characters in your password? E.g. $ @ " etc? I've seen issues where login keyboard is in UK format, but normal keyboard (when logged in) is US.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

Hello
No to all questions
I did have an external keyboard but I unplugged everythink and used the laptop keyboard.
My password was always 4 letters in lowercase.

In the meantime I have removed the harddrive and am copying the data to another machine. The only thing I can do is to format it. Hopefully I don't need to access the user account to do that.

Any suggestions would be huge. is there a password recovery utility I could use
Unfortunately I didn't create a password recovery. But I shouldn't have had to anyway. Its not like I lost it or forgotten it.

Is there another admin account on the machine you can log into? If the account you're locked out of is a local account you should be able to reset the password that way.

Otherwise can't you reset the password online if it's a microsoft account?

you haven't accidentally pressed the function key to enable numpad over the qwerty keys? Some laptops have this.
I'd try the external keyboard again.

Otherwise the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows has a password renew utility that definitely works on XP, Vista, 7, not sure about 8, 8.1
Definitely worth a try (8 is not all that different, it will probably work).

I guess it wasn't a windows live ID you used, otherwise just reset password from another device.

I don't have a cd drive on this laptop.
I'm trying to make a USB boot of Hirens but you need a CD at some point along the way.

Have you tried jonb's suggestion yet?

Resetting your windows live (hotmail/outlook.com/...) account effectively resets the password on your pc if it's online and your accounts are linked.
