sbiddle: But there isn't just one set of programs. If you click on calculator from the modern UI home page you're going to get the modern UI touchscreen version. If you launch it from the desktop you'll get the old classic UI.

The problem is Windows8 just made the whole mix between both far too confusing. 8.1 and the 8.1 update improved on this greatly, but it's really taken Win 10 to fix the issues.

Interesting, but that's not my experience. I don't even see the modern UI, I just see a standard desktop and start menu, like Windows 7. I just hit start, type calc, hit enter, and I get the slow modern app instead of the fast old app.

I meant the old calculator in 8.1, not 10.

updated my windows build in the last hour, redeployed "windows calculator" from the new store, fired up "calc" from a start/run command - it took less than 2 seconds to appear and be ready for input.

Are "Modern" apps those terrible jokes that come with Windows 8?

I installed the Windows 8 version of Skype and my god, what an unmitigated disaster it was.
Viber isn't any better, it's slow to do anything and then just sits there like a overweight dog, wheezing and not doing a thing.

That whole touch/tiles things in Windows 8 was obviously developed by clowns. Not even GOOD clowns. Really stupid, unfunny ones.

I'm sure theres 0.2% of people out there who'd disagree, but I've yet to meet them.  And when I do, I'll be closely counting their limbs.

I am clearly missing something.  I can load calc.exe instantly on any version of windows I've ever run?

Sorry yes I see yours was a response to someone else.

Have I misread something here... Typing 'calc' in to to the Classic Shell start menu on 8.1 brings up the old calculator immediately.

Are you saying the latest build on the latest hardware has the performance of Windows 1.0 on a 4.77Mhz 8088?

The window comes up quickly but empty, then in 0.5 - 1 second it decides it's a calculator and shows the buttons. It's not particularly slow, I've wasted more time talking about it than I'll ever save by making it faster.

Yabanize: If the time it took modern apps to launch was fixed it would be much nicer to use,

Perhaps they should get rid of the splash screens

As long as they make good modern apps that work well on both mouse and keyboard + touchscreens there's no reason to make win32 apps anymore

+ the advantage of write once for many different devices and screen sizes

can you describe the specs of your system please, what Windows 10 build you are on, and how long it takes CALC to start?

I don't see any such delay or splash screen on my Windows 10 builds, but I'm probably on a slightly later build

you obviously hate the tiles, but many people like them, particularly n00bs that just want to click the 5-10 apps they run and thats it.

This is the challenge in designing Windows with 1B users

Its a bit like pizza toppings, someone hates anchovies, someone loves seafood

i7 2600K (which is about 10% slower than the latest generation), 16GB RAM, 120GB SSD plus various other disks, latest generation motherboard that fits that CPU (just replaced it).

Calc being a modern app was one of the few things that drove me away from Windows 10.
I was able to replace it with Calculator Plus from Microsoft but ..
