jonathan18: Nathan - given you say the upgrade process will need to confirm the current version of Windows running on a PC, can you advise how to do a clean install of Windows 10 from day one? (Ie, one that doesn't require an initial install of 10 over my current 8.1 install before then doing a clean install.) Can I download the files and install them onto a bootable USB stick before then doing a totally clean install? My PC is running like a dog since upgrading to 8, so I'd like to start with a blank slate, so to speak. Thanks!

You will be able to clean install on July 29, you'll need to kick off the upgrade from your activated OS to get your free upgrade key

Then you can clean install.

So i have a Win 7 machine that I use for almost everything currently (email, browsing, video editing, games bla bla bla)

I also have a new machine that I intend to install a new purchased copy of Windows 10, this will take the role of the Win 7 machine.

I want to upgrade the Win 7 box to a FRESH, UNTAINTED copy of Windows 10 but after I have exported all the junk off it.

Can I avoid all the hassle of upgrading the Windows 7 install to Windows 10, the wiping it and using the upgrading offered key to install a fresh Win 10 install?

just want to avoid the pain of an upgrade and an install - I think this is the main question people are asking a simple answer to.

apologies i thought I answered this already

you kick off the Windows 10 upgrade from your activated, genuine Windows 7 SP1 machine, your Windows 10 upgrade license key is then stored in the cloud

You can then blow that machine away, use the special ISO image we release on July 29, and it gets your key automatically.

Apologies if this question has already been answered, I didn't see it as I've been following along. Can you I go from an Insider Preview of 10 to the full version using my (unopened and unused) Windows 8.1 license?

If you are running an Insider machine it should already be running a fully activated copy of build 10240 and you are done.

Thanks Nathan.

I'll be buying a copy as soon as PB tech are selling the Physical media.

I hear rumors of 10 coming on a USB stick this time around?

From what I've read from this thread now is this (if you own a Win 7 license)

* Initial Windows 10 MUST be done via an upgrade from a Windows 7/8.1 installation.
* Once upgrade is completed you will have access to an ISO/install file to do a clean install straight to 10 in the future. No upgrade process needed.

@nathan  is what I have heard true that the 'home' version of Windows 10 will always install all updates immediately and not ask?

I have two PCs I want Windows 10 on but want to be in control of when Windows updates are installed and reboots are done. Possible on 'home' version upgrades?

Thanks.

nzkiwiman: nathan, thanks for answering all the questions

Seems to be a fair bit of confusion around regarding this "upgrade progress" - over the weekend (1st/2nd) I'll be updating my Windows 7 install to 10 and see if I like it
On another SSD I have my 8.1 install that I will also try to upgrade to 10, thereby hopefully securing 2 official activations (on the same hardware, on the same Microsoft account)

It may not work ..

I'm trying to answer the confusion :)

did you have 2 Windows activated genuine licenses before?

then you'll have 2 Windows 10 licenses.

Thanks nathan

Windows 7 - key acquired when I had a Technet subscription (around 2009 or 2010)
Windows 8.1 Pro - purchased media

I did also have an Insider connection but stopped using Win10 quite a few builds ago due to frustrations with simple things - did not install last build before activation services were taken offline

good point - sony has asked owners to wait for driver support in august on this lappie

If the machine isn't compatible the reservation prompt will not activate

Is there a manual check we can do to check or confirm eligibility?

A compatibility check or a license check or.something else?

Well I don't have the pop up for reservation on one of my PC's despite having the Update installed which supposedly provides the ability to reserve it, so I am trying to determine for what reason it's been deemed it's ineligible or if there is another technical issue preventing it.
