There's no guarantee you'll get it at the "launch" time. Microsoft doesn't want any problems so they are rolling it out slowly, and you'll only be offered it when they have scanned your computer and determined you won't have any issues with it.
There's no way to know, of course, but this could take anywhere from hours to weeks!

According to the thread I linked to (and answered by Nathan from MS), if you have the reservation icon, it means your machine is compatible, and the download will start on the 29th.  We SHOULD (as in NZ should) get it quite quickly I would hope, before the US and European countries hit midnight and swamp the servers.

you will be able to download an ISO image and perform the upgrade even if it is not offered by Windows Update or by the Reservation prompt

the update through the reservation prompt is being staggered.

Not every single machine will get it on July 29.  The Internet would break

You can download an ISO image from windows.com and perform the upgrade that way if you can't get it thru the prompt

Oh, good to know!  But I assume it still has to pass the Windows 10 compatibility checks? And that the license is still an upgrade from the existing OS (i.e. not a bare metal install)?

I can't recall if I have seen or heard somewhere that the file has already been downloaded into our machines? The prompt will just notify us to Install it?  I'm unsure :P

I doubt the internet would break.

More likely they roll it out slowly to hopefully catch and release bugs before rolling it out.

It's Akamai. I thought only Apple had the power to slow them down...

All this excitement ...  Perhaps even waiting till initial problems are sorted, before pushing the install button, even if MS have downloaded wouldnt be a bad idea.....

yes

when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly.

Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.
