If it's not ready yet why does it keep trying to update and fail

For Something Happened the most likely case where this is hit is where you using the tool to upgrade now in a unsupported scenario.

So for example, when you use Upgrade now and your Windows edition is Enterprise.

Or your locale setting are pointed to a language that is not supported by upgrade.

Try the downloadable ISO again at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

is there a closing date to "reserve" windows 10? i know it's free for 1 year to upgrade, but you don't need to "reserve" prior?

Thanks Nathan Windows 8.1 Pro English NZ with US keyboard. Have tried installing direct and from usb. USB asks for "KEY" but don't have a win10 key yet and obviously my 8.1 is not accepted

Will have to be patient I guess, but why does it keep trying to update and fail if my PC is not yet ready?

Did you run setup on the USB from within your current Windows?

ToPGuNZ:
ToPGuNZ: My notification disappeared,  windows update says it is reserved, so currently using the Windows update tool on a Win 7 Home Premium PC. Looking forward to this.

And it just stopped. PC is on, no hard drive activity, nothing on screen. Will leave for awhile, I have a feeling restarting is not going to go well.

I turned it off and on and it reverted back to Win 7 and provided this error. I will now uninstall media centre and try again. Does anyone have any idea what this error means?

I had this issue - I'd suggest you double and triple check the options that you chose when you created the USB install match your current install exactly. One thing to note - if you change the language option AFTER having chosen the edition (home or pro) and/or whether you want 32 or 64 bit, then the media creation tool resets the other choices to the defaults - Win 10 Home and 32 bit. It's really the most RETARDED UX behaviour I've seen in a LONG time.

I will guess the imaging process could not target a drive or partition for some reason, but I do not know. Is there BIOS boot sector protection?

I managed to install windows 10 off a USB after multiple fails with the Windows Update.
I was actually in looking around in Windows 10 for a few minutes last night before shutting my PC dow.

This morning however I cannot start up the PC, I just get a blank screen.
I have tried both inputs Analogue and digital on the screen and both are blank.

I even tried putting the USB back in to see if I could start up from that, but no.

Any ideas please?
