My laptop has crashed twice in the last 2 days. Never happened with 8.1

I'm guessing driver issue here

My PC crashes when using Opera and playing or attempting to play Flash based videos never crashed under 8.1,  the problem is it just locks up solid so windows does not get a chance to create an error report in the event viewer so I have no Idea what is the cause and no idea of what needs to be reinstalled..  For now I assume it's an Opera problem as flash plays fine in edge and FF and palemoon the funny thing is that even just going to Adobe's site and letting it check the flash version is enough to cause the crash instantly and the only recourse is to push reset

Installed Win 10 over Win 7 on my desktop. It went without issue, however there is an issue everyday when I boot up.

When I shut down at the end of a day I turn off the power at the wall. When I boot up for the first time next day it boots up to my main screen as normal. However the internet icon at the bottom right indicates no access and the keyboard and mouse do not work at all.

If I reboot from that scenario the computer will start up with everything working fine. If I shut down the computer but don't power off at the wall the computer will reboot fine next time I start with internet access, keyboard and mouse working fine.

Ideas?

I keep running into things with Windows 10 that seem random and don't make any sense. Today I noticed that there was a backlog of updates. I have set my connection to metered to give me a degree of control over updating, but I could find no button anywhere to manually do the updates and there was a notification that one update was 70 percent or so completed and that it was downloading, except it wasn't. It was just frozen and nothing was actually happening. If I click around the settings and advanced options, I get different information about the updates, but no way to control anything. There is no function to force an update or to cancel or delete an update you don't want.

Since everything was jammed up and I had no control whatsoever, all I could do was turn off the metered setting and reboot, hoping the automatic update functions would take over. This did work after a fashion, though I had to keep rebooting to install each update individually before it would move on to the next one. There were no messages telling me to do this. Everything just stopped so I rebooted to see if that would help and it did.

Eventually all the updates installed and Windows says they installed correctly. Then another notification popped up after the last reboot so I tried to install that as well. Instead of installing, I received this error: • Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3087916) - Error 0x80200056

It says it will keep trying. I don't want it to. I looked at the log and it has already tried dozens of times without my knowledge, in spite of my setting the connection to metered. Yet there is no option to cancel or discard it. So now an update that only produces errors is stuck in my queue, blocking everything else that comes along. This is just stupid. Why in the devil can't users just choose what to update, and when to do it? The complete lack of any user controls over this is absolute idiocy on Microsoft's part. If they want to hide this out of sight to keep it away from the dummies, that's fine, but don't get rid of it altogether. This oversight is as bad as the 8.1 metro interface. It has to be fixed!

At present the only way I can get updates to work at all is to keep changing the metered setting and rebooting. This works after a fashion but is awkward to say the least. When I was trying to solve it my search function also stopped working for unknown reasons. The window remained blank regardless of what I typed. Now it is mysteriously working again. Just another random occurrence. How is anyone supposed to get anything done with this kind of circus going on? It really is just like Windows 98 and Vista. In spite of all the hype Microsoft hasn't learned a thing.

I also still keep getting warnings about Windows Security Center being off, and I keep getting an error when I try to turn it on. I have had enough of this nonsense. I am very reluctantly winding back to 8.1. Windows 10 just isn't ready for public distribution.

Sorted. Found out USB hub was not powering up on boot. Uninstalled driver and scan for hardware change in Device Manager and all working.

Posting just in case anyone runs across the issue I had. I have an old Acer Aspire One 522 netbook laying around which came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Starter. I have upgraded to 2GB of RAM in the past because it was so darn slow, and was keen to try Windows 10 on it to see if that improved the performance, with an aim to using it as an HTPC on the bedroom TV. However the Windows 10 icon never came up in the system tray. I ran the tool to check if it was upgradeable and that told me I was running Windows 7 Enterprise, which I clearly was not. I was able to remedy this by downloading the 32-bit Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft, burning it to a DVD and running that in an external disc drive to install the new software. Took a while but ran the upgrade without issue, and recognised I had a valid install so I didn't have to do a clean one. I've not had a lot of time to test it out, but it doesn't seem to be running any slower.

A few random observations after running it for a while.

I had all kinds of trouble running Google Play music and to a lesser extent Youtube in Chrome. Google Play Music is completely broken in Edge BTW.

Issues were Chrome CPU running up to 50% of the PC (this is a modest AMD A4-5300 and I am using a separate Radeon HD5450 card because the onboard video does not support 1920x1080 over VGA.

This results in the audio stream having audio blips as the toal CPU load hits 100% every now and then which is annoying.

I think I eventually managed to fix this when AMD pushed down new video drivers and I found a way to increase the audio buffer in Chrome through a command line parameter.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --audio-buffer-size=2048

These issues did not occur with Windows 8.1 SP1.  I was almost tempted to back out to that release.

Then tried out Cortana by setting the language and location to the US but then it wanted me to logon to a Microsoft account. I have one but it seemed doing that would mean I would need to use a Microsoft account logon for that PC and I much prefer a local account.  Is that the case? The message was not clear at all.

You do need to sign in with a Microsoft account if you want to use Cortana - unless you're on a domain in which case you can add your Microsoft account alongside your domain account.

Is there a reason you prefer the local account over the Microsoft account for logon on that PC?  There are a bunch of benefits you can get using a Microsoft account - including synching your settings etc across multiple PCs via the cloud.

I think the idea of logging in with a global account is an appalling idea.

It is a terrible idea for security and privacy.

I don't want my computer seamlessly exchanging data with Internet sites.

Neither, do most businesses.. hence 'local account alongside the Microsoft account' idea.

The last time I did that on another PC it reset my desktop completely to some vanilla image. I then had to customise it all again. Now that my desktop is customised the way I like I don't want to do that again.

Can I have both the local and Microsoft accounts available to logon?  They seem to be options for the machine I do logon via Microsoft.

And I sync my data using a Google account :-)
