MikeB4: I am starting to have some concerning misgivings about upgrading to Windows 10

don't say things like that - you'll get called a luddite - I did :)

windows 10.0 is likely to be a pile of trouble historically . It comes straight after an okay operating system fixing the issues of the previous OS :)  [snip]

I'm running 10 PCs on Win 10 Pro (upgrade from Win 7 followed by a fresh install) and have yet to have a problem that wasn't easily fixed.

... and I don't consider Windows 8/8.1 to be an "OK operating system" - I avoided it like The Plague.  smile

So what makes 10 any better? It still has all those horrible app type things in place - a really unfriendly user interface and a really nasty tie into microsoft who have made having MS accounts even closer to being manadatory than Windows 8 did.

faster, leaner, meaner, way more secure, DX12, a whole bunch of business benefits

The cloud enablement that makes things easier for users. You know in the same way that the 2 other ecosystems with Android and iOS make things easier for users by using cloud identities

But for some reason when Microsoft does it, it's bad

MikeB4: Photos now opens but crashes and goes in less than a minute. Frustrating.

What you're experiencing is definitely not normal

Are you receiving app updates from the Store?

Yes it is fully patched and all Apps Programs updated. I always check daily for updates.

Would linking to a cloud photos album on One drive cause this

OK now I'm really angry. I just lost a lengthy post as I was posting it. Text completely vanished into cyberspace, no trace, no possibility of recovery. Second time it has happened. This time I was able to definitely determine that it happened because #$#~@#$~$#!% Windows 10 decided to force an update on me at the exact moment I tried to post. I could see that from the time stamp on the notification that the update failed (We can't finish downloading your update... etc.)

Why does a megacorporation like Microsoft keep coming up with these kinds of utterly idiotic stupid counter-productive moronic brain-dead ideas? This forced update crap absolutely undermines the usefulness of Windows 10. I have updates turned off as far as Windows lets me but this kind of thing keeps happening. The people responsible for this unbelievably stupid short-sited policy need to be taken out and shot. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb. How much are those idiots being paid?

For me, the biggest thing that keeps me coming back to Mac is the inconsistency in the UI and I was hoping that Windows 10 would tidy that up with a uniform WinRT/XAML look and feel but alas here we are and it is a horrible mess once again. As I've said in the past, Microsoft cannot control third parties but at the very least Microsoft should be setting the 'gold standard' to which everyone else should aspire to and thus pull up the whole industry by raising the bar when it comes to UI design and consistency by providing a better UI in their own products.

freitasm: Microsoft's own apps don't really look like coming from the same company with menus in different places and hard to find options.

Photos App gets worse with every update, and the Video App is reaching that standard to. Mail still lags behind what was available in previous Windows versions.

If the November update does not improve things I can see my Windows Machines being retired.

Just "upgrade" to Windows 8.1 with all updates. It's actually pretty good.

I am still stunned that 6 months after release with countless new insider builds, the flagship feature of the "start menu" won't actually "start" about 30% of the time. Unforgivable.

Beginning to think you are right. I have just spent an hour trying to get the sodding Photos App to work, it will open for a few seconds then close. No error messages anywhere.

I've had no problems with Windows 10 at all.  But then I *always* do a clean install when changing major version no's.  This time I installed a brand new SSD and a clean install of Win10.  I updated to the 1511 build after downloading the ISO and extracting it to a USB stick.

I'm very happy with Windows 10.  No issues at all.  I can't really compare the speed to before upgrading as the machine now has an SSD whereas before it was a spinning platter.
