Out of the blue yesterday started getting "Critical Error your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in"

So of course done the sign out and back in, still no go, done the google search which suggest amongst other things to try a system restore, which I have just completed, with no change.

So what now, really don't want to re-install windows, anyone else had this problem and managed to get it sorted out?

I had it once. Did the log-out and logged back in an all was well thankfully. From memory I had no choice it was either that or shut down. I only have one master admin ID on that computer and wondered if it was something to do with the account.

I had an issue on my Dad's laptop where the start menu wouldnt work. Found some stuff online that had a powershell script to run but that didnt fix it. What i did was create a new admin user, logged in as that, deleted the old profile under system -> Advanced System SEttings -> User profiles.
Re logged in and it was all working fine

[WARNING!!!!]
This will erase all files under the username (found in c:\users\username) so ensure you have backed up everything before doing the method above.

yes and that's the big issue, I have actually got around it, a backup I made (yes some people do actually have backups) from a few days prior I was able to restore and that got it working again.
