PhantomNVD:
joker97: If i had deleted the system backup files is there any way of going back to before anniversary edition?

Any disadvantages of not being on anniversary edition?

I have a driver issue

I've used 8.1 and 10vanilla drivers on 3 year old laptops to solve various 'custom' features (fingerprint scanner/card reader etc)

Have you tried installing your older working drivers again?

It's not that simple

1. there is an unknown device with hardware id "root\cbfs_storlib_bus3" - no idea how to find a driver for that thing. MY solution was disable virtualization in BIOS. still there however, annoys my OCD brain when I remember it :)

2. the sound is really muffled, and I have to restart the sound driver every time and it's crystal clear after that. Ok i could try the reinstall driver

3. the laptop wakes up a lot when I put it to sleep, to find it is awake a few hours later and battery is half gone. luckily it has an 8 hr battery but still.

- I have disabled everything in task scheduler. I have set in BIOS not to allow anything to wake the system. I have set touch screen, trackpad, usb, LAN, wifi, everything under thedarn device manager to not allow to wake the system. I have physically disconnected the power to the touch screen. I would like to know how to physically disconnect the Nvidia gpu however ...

- powercfg -lastwake shows wake count 1 wake history 0 (ie it doesn't know what wakes it). I have followed all power and battery debug steps in the internet but does not tell me what woke it. so i have no idea.

does it bother me? not for 12 months ... i have moved on with my life :)

No news for most of the people on Geekzone, but it explains why fixing Windows 10 and Windows 7 updating issues is not exactly a top priority.    Quality control is no longer vital to MS.

I'm not convinced that the explains what you're saying. Overall, the article is not very good. Although it does have some good points, the main headline is the weakest part of it:

1. It starts with a straw man, the assumption that Windows is seen as the main revenue earner for Microsoft. The assumption is only reasonable if you're ignorant of Microsoft and its financial reports. Microsoft haven't even bothered to group Windows OS by itself for many years: for example, they included Windows Live applications. Now it is subsumed with a lot of other stuff.

Do you think that Windows is number one in bringing in the cash? It’s a reasonable assumption. Windows for years was the undisputed cash cow for Microsoft,...

2. Microsoft's goal has generally been to focus on productivity applications and development. Software development has always been a Bill Gates priority.  Productivity applications were just as important in 1997, when Office was what Apple needed to survive, and not much has changed ever since.

3. What makes the argument particularly specious is that Microsoft have generally structured their product groups so that the Windows revenue is not first. In the mid 1990s they had two product groups Windows and "virtually everything else". Windows was revenue was a little smaller even then. As time goes on they have separated out other categories and Windows well out of first place.

Well, there's always LTSB. Btw, has 'deferred' got Anniversary? There's that.

Look at the latest changes:

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/12/07/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-14986-pc/#33AzYRX0s3RafeW1.97

Will be interesting to see whether they follow through and fix up the DPI mess when it comes to the traditional win32 components. There is mention of the following:

"[ADDED 12/9] Improved high DPI support for desktop apps: Your feedback is important to us, and a few months ago, we shared a discussion about the progress we’d made to high DPI scaling in the Anniversary Update. With the release of Build 14986 to Windows Insiders, we’re very excited to share the next part in that story. Windows Insiders with high DPI devices, such as the Surface Book, will now see improved crispness in the text of a number of desktop applications that previously would display blurry – in particular Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap ins like Device Manager. This story has yet another chapter, so keep an eye out for more on this subject in future flights."

Because what really holds back Windows 10, at least from a Mac user perspective, is the lack of polish and focus on ensuring there is a great UI experience rather than right now where the UWP applications look fabulous but lacking in features but win32 applications looking at though they've been hit by an ugly stick - Explorer.exe and its mishmash mess of icons etc. being the prime example of that.

Edit: Screenshot of the improved DPI on the latest build when using MMC based applications:

Anyone has laptop that doesn't charge when you plug it in after putting it to sleep?

Thanks, I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue, never used to do that before updating to Anniversary Edition. Out of this whole list, would any specific driver stand out that could influence charging behaviour that I could try reinstalling? I looked at it and nothing in particular jumps out at me. Thinking of restoring the image I had just before I updated it.

Not sure if exactly the same situation, but I had this problem and tried Bob Vinton's simple solution in this thread and it worked for me:

Speaking of MMC, is it any better in Windows 10 / &Server?

MMC was always a bit unsuited for some of the purposes it was used for, but the unsuitability really gets somewhat painful with something like hyper-v management.

After having a three to four hour battle getting the anniversary update for W10 installed, I decided to give W7 another spin.    I had an image with the first convenience rollup so I thought I would get the latest rollup.    So I double clicked on the rollup file to start the installation.   This time W7 just sat there saying 'searching for updates on this computer', probably for around fifteen minutes or so with nothing happening.

So I have decided that at least for the lifespan of this PC motherboard, I don't need Windows at all.     All my copies of Windows 7 and Windows 10 & backup images & product keys, have just been put in the rubbish.     Maybe in a year or two MS will improve Windows 10 enough for me to give it another go.

Please note this is not an anti Microsoft rant,  Linux Mint and Xubuntu are far from perfect, but on my particular setup cause me less grief and aggravation than Windows.

The only things I look at in MMC are device manager and disk management, both are still laggy slow crashprone pieces of crap to use.

Is there no Windows 10 SKU? I have a strange situation where a customer needs to upgrade from W8.1 to W10, but all I can see is full versions!

Admin account, UAC disabled. But depending where I am I still can't create shortcuts where I want, 'new' only gives me the option of folder, etc etc. It's annoying enough to be asked to confirm though I get it, but when I don't even have the option to perform action as admin and confirm... I shouldn't have to "command prompt here (Admin)" and "type NUL > NewFile.txt".

No I don't want to create a shortcut on the desktop instead. And I'll copy it straight back here if you do so why, why.
