I did a fresh Windows 10 install because I didn't want some of the pre-installed software. One of the advantages is that you get to install the Intel video drivers instead of the OEM drivers - which are never updated.

Last month Windows decided to "help me" and installed OEM drivers - version 10.18.15... So today I unplug the laptop from the Internet, uninstall the drivers and install the Intel reference - again. Reboot and the laptop is now on 20.19.15. That's what I want.

Suddenly the screen flashes, and I immediately go to check the drivers - and it's back to 10.18.15.

For goodness sake. Isn't a way for this damn system to do what *I* want?

I had the same issue with a Dell Touchpad driver on my laptop.

Newest version is compatible but doesn't support the second set of buttons and trackpoint.

Each time I downgraded it upgrades again on its own, Eventually I found a different version that worked and must not have had any newer ones in its update path because It stopped trying to update.

Perpetually undecided.

There is a Microsoft utility out there that will block (hide) updates. I'll see if I can find the link later if no one else beats me to it.

I found a policy to block these. Changed, deleted driver and installed the reference one. Let's see how it goes.

It feels like more and more, you get less and less control - and choice, from your windows experience. Is this the opposite of what I want from Windows.

There is a general move, supported from what I can tell by the gpu vendors in this case, to windows update providing the driver updates too... I'm not sure if this is the only way, but I read that NVidia and AMD wanted to keep drivers up to date in Windows 10 using this method...

I don't mind the driver coming from the Windows Update servers. But don't force me a driver that is at least 12 months behind the one that I had installed before.

Out of curiosity - what happen when you used the old driver? Any actual issues?
