My sons PC has a partitioned 1TB HD - 600 & 400 - and we want to get him a 3tb for Christmas. I just want to check if it is possible and safe to clone his current drive onto a single hd without partitions. Many thanks.

I wouldn't recommend having one 3TB drive as there are good logical reasons for partitioning a drive:
To separate programs and data files so backup and restore can be faster and easier to manage.
To store the less frequently accessed files on the slowest part of the drive.
etc.

If you need them there are good selections of free driver cloners and free partition managers.
