would it have anything to do with the fact that i copied the user files from c:\documents and settings to a second drive partition, installed a fresh version of windows and then copied the user files back to overwrite the blank ones created.

The first error is probaby related to a NVIDIA driver. The second is AVG.

I would say your computer has a hardware fault causing these problems. Anything such as memory or hard drive could cause problems loading programs.

It could. You should use the Transfer Wizard to do that and not just copy.

I can't say much about the error, as I'm on my iPod typing this and its really hard to do research on this thing, but looks like AVG caught something.

the process i followed was as follows

it came up loading windows xp home edition after turning it on.

the black screen.

then it restarted

i selected safe mode

copied the user files to a different partition

restarted windows

booted from the windows cd

tried repair option but could not work it out

folowed windows instructions on formatting and installing windows

got back in

copied user files back and basic drivers back

and sp2

all failed here (internet stopped working)

using system restore i rolled it back to before sp2

the all appeared fine (internet working)

but fast user switching was not.

thats where i am at now,

Ah, so you don't actually have a fresh Windows install.

You have a copy of windows that most likely have parts of SP1 and SP2 since installing SP2 failed and files for your profile were copied over.

At this point I really recommend you install Windows again. Make sure you copy only "My Documents" from the other partition. Don't bring back anything else.

Thn run Windows Update and let it do its thing.

I'm back on computer...

File and Settings Transfer Wizard does what it says - transfer user account files in My Documents and settings, it's not backup software.

I recommend just using it for settings and manually copy your pics (Picasa by the way has a great backup feature!)

IE updates are system-wide as Windows relies on IE to function.

As I said before, try and give us details when you wipe your system.

If you just want the data I don't recommend using the wizard. You should manually copy the files you want to other partition (not safe) or to another drive (safer).

Thn you install a fresh copy of Windows.

Don't transfer settings because whatever you have now is obviously not working ok and I wouldn't trust the settings on this machine.

I think you now have enough information to actually clean up the machine.

That's Vista.

It's under \Documents and Settings\[USER]\Favourites

EDIT: Man I'm so used to Linux.
