I've experienced fault memory twice before - here were my symptoms:
  • Unexpected reboots
  • Unexpected BSODs
  • Weird stalling and crashing of apps, then a complete freeze
  • Motherboard reporting different memory sizes
You can test RAM using MemTest.

I've also had 3 hard drives crash or die on me before. They usually result in hard drives with bad sectors and then complete failure.

Download the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic. Run it to create an ISO file. Then burn the ISO file to a CD and boot it. Let it run overnight and see if it shows any memory errors.

This will point in one direction. If nothing is shown then I suggest taking this machine to a technician who should test memory, HDD, motherboard and PSU.

ok, so to clarify i was talking about my most recent install.

which like i said workied fine except the generic host win32 error or whatever it is and the constant flow of traffic with no internet apps open.

so i downloaded zone alarm got carried away with securty and now i cant get in.

so here we go again with windows.

if there is any guru on the coast willing to take a look feel free its gettng on my nerves now.

hey thanks all for your help.

after a restart to complete the avast virus removal process my cd drive decided to smash my windows xp cd, my floppy drive failed and we were locked out of windows.

so my pc was off to a techie :( and apparently i am no longer allowed to try and fix things ... hmmmmm
