in my opinion you are best to wait for microsoft to release a service pack for vista as they still haven't worked out all the kinks and also the more ram the better as vista is Very Very Slow due heavy applications built in but otherwise vista is a good os, but for now xp is for me.

This maybe your opinion, but I wouldn't go as far as advise to wait for a service pack. I am using Windows Vista RTM since before the official release and it's been really good - a couple of problems, but nothing that hasn't been solved already.

Buy anything with vista ultimate or vista business and you can downgrade to XP Pro as long as you have a cd of XP Pro from a previous laptop/pc you basically use the older computers key, then ring microsoft up via phone (instead of internet activation) and explain your wanting to use "vista downgrade rights"

Be careful of Dell laptops however they tend to not supply XP drivers for their laptops unless you can get that model in XP as well.  If unsure grab the model of laptop your about to buy, go to manufacturer website and check driver status before hand.

As for me, I have XP & Vista dual boot and to be honest I used vista for awhile (nice eye candy) but I just couldnt stand it and found it easier to just boot to XP :)
