So my PC's still out of action - resurrected my old win 7 laptop - but can't see my wife's machine. Used to - so something's changed - no idea what - despite searching and finding related issues.
Thought I'd have mine back by now - but now need to get the network working. Can see the printer - just not the other laptop.
Any ideas where to start?

I'm assuming you're referring to not seeing Windows network shares?

Is the workgroup name set to the same on both machines?

You may also need to review your advanced sharing settings and firewall settings.

good luck, you'll need it .  :-)

No.1 ) turn on network discovery on both (in network settings above)

uninstall any 3rd party firewalls , uninstall 3rd party AV/internet security (as a test)
Disable Win Firewalls (as a test)
ping the Win7's ip
ping the win7's PC name
start, run, //win7's IP
start run //win7's PCname
disable homegroup services
check all needed services are actually running
make a new test shared directory on the win7 pc : set share/ntfs permissions to guest, anyone etc
make sure both have the same workgroup name
disable ipv6 on both
have common username/pass on both & login as that (doesnt usually help though)
try both via network cable, ie not wifi

if all that fails, you'll need a net use batch file . Thats where it gets harder

Not sure how the IP address will help - most frequent use is Treecomp to sync files between the two - especially when working on client's accounts - I do one part, she does another etc. She can still see me - but not vice-versa.
We don't use workgroups.
I've got network discovery and file / print sharing on. Sames users / passwords on both machines. (Had originally forgotten that - but it works from the Win10 machine in anyway.)
Been through and tried advanced settings (e.g. password sharing on / off).
Just been through and checked the other laptop's firewall - mine seemed OK and she does get in - I just can't get in. I vaguely remember (a stroke means my memory's not what it was) when she went from Win 9 to Win 10 she had some problem with ZoneAlarm, so resorted to Windows firewall. I'll check when she gets back shortly - but I had a look and can't see anything wrong - but I'm far from an expert. However the fact my old system was getting through sugggests there should be no reason why it doesn't now. Turned off firewalls and still had the same problem.
We're using cable (use wifi in the lounge).
Run out of time now - have to move on - may try when my wife's back and we can both tackle this - although I'd love the PC back early next week.

Treecomp appears to be a file copy utility

It will be using SMB file sharing

On your local PC

Net use x: \\remote-pc\share
