A family member has a Windows 7 laptop. They're getting error 80070BC9 trying to install the September security update. They say they're not getting newer updates because it seems to prevent others being found or installed.

I've suggested W10 upgrade, but they said the computer's old and will be replaced before long, they'd just like to keep it patched until then. I also suggested a reinstall, which they can't do themselves so would probably cost a few hundred dollars to get a computer store to do it.

I've found a couple of things to try, like this and this. I'm interested in any other solutions. Maybe there's a newer update that will include all the older updates. Maybe there's a way to apply it manually.

Any ideas appreciated :)

When I tried to install the four updates that make up the KB manually I get:

  • Two saying "not applicable to this computer"
  • "Software Update KB4040977 Installation Wizard does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your computer."
  • "Software Update KB4040973 Installation Wizard does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your computer."

Yes I've just done that thanks, but I had to restart and have to wait for the computer owner to log in tomorrow - it's in the UK, I'm using TeamViewer.

I found another idea that said to start in safe mode and delete a bunch of things, but in safe mode I can't log in.
