My Dad's Windows 10 laptop is acting weird. There's problems with keyboard and mouse, Windows update, and a couple of other things. I tried to fix 'em, can't, takes too long.

He lives at the other end of the country from me, so I can't do anything myself.

Is there an easy way to refresh / reinstall Windows that I can have him do? Even if it just get the OS installed, I can then have him install TeamViewer and do the rest myself.

Alternately, can he upgrade to Windows 10 free still, or is that offer well gone?

Nice tip. He now thinks he has Windows 10 - he thought it was Windows 8 as it was written on the bottom of the laptop.

I'm going to recommend a backup then refreshing Windows.

Havent done one in the last 3 months, but I upgraded a few machines from 7/8 to 10 with no issues or cost.

Could he run   SFC /SCANNOW  from command prompt?

Should scan whole system and restore any missing or corrupt O/S files.

I could remote in and do it, but I've tried all the common stuff and nothing helped.

I hope my replacement Surface Pro 2 power cord arrives before Jan 16 so I can do the Win10 upgrade.

Life is too short to remove USB safely.

It's an IEC C7 plug, I just grabbed one off an old transistor radio I had in the shed. I might send off for an official replacement now I know the Surface Pro 3 is also eligible. I bet you have one somewhere in the house if you go hunting.
