Zepanda66:

I think microsoft probably overreacted pulling the update. They should have surveyed how big the problem was. It seems they pulled it because of the noise the apparent issue was making on social media which by all accounts shouldn't really be taken seriously unless they did receive actual complaints about files being deleted.

No, they needed to pull it. Even if it only affected 1%, that is still millions of people.

It sounds like @MikeB4 was lucky that he could retrieve from the OneDrive bin. From what I have read, for many users, the files are just gone and Microsoft are recommending those effected use their PCs as little as possible and to contact MS for them to retrieve the files. That sounds like they might just be using a file recovery tool and want people to not use the PC so as to minimize the chance of the deleted files being overwritten.

Most of us on Geekzone are well covered with backups, but I can assure you that the majority of home users aren't.

How do you know their telemetry didn't point to the issue being actually bigger than what we have been hearing?

I think you don't have all facts in front of you. Microsoft had to pull this or risk a much bigger backslash.

And possibly a forward slash.

Looks like it addresses a problem:

Microsoft: Addresses an issue where an incorrect timing calculation may prematurely delete user profiles on devices subject to the "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of day” group policy.

if it is installed prior to the upgrade process?

Yup, this is most likely related to the invariant TSC timing change from 3.6 to 10MHz. If you ever wrestled with HPET this is similar to that except that Microsoft went and patched it to everyone.

Not sure why they changed it (aside from spectre mitigation attempts), I have a feeling its going to open up a dusty closet full of things that relied on the timing to remain as is.

The official blog post on the issue says various One Drive clients and or moving profile subs aka special folders:

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2018/10/09/updated-version-of-windows-10-october-2018-update-released-to-windows-insiders/

No direct mention of 'an incorrect timing calculation' in that one. It does mention 'the update construction sequence'.

As previously posted: I updated both my computers on 3rd Oct to 1809 (one via WU, the other with the Media Creation Tool) No loss of files or folders. One Drive is installed and actively syncs on both computers, but I dont use it to store/backup files or folders.

Also updated both computers on Patch Tuesday (11th Oct) again I haven't had any problems with either computer.

I read somewhere the Patch Tuesday cumulative update is only affecting HP and Dell computers...

The  Windows 10 iso available to download has reverted to one titled Win_Edu-1803_English_x64.iso   But don't be alarmed at the 'Edu' bit all the version choices are still there.

I have not used it but I installed the WOEusb ppa on my Xubuntu system & made a W10 usb.  On booting it goes to a screen where it gives several choices on which version you want to install including Home, Pro, Education, etc.  It's quite a long list.

Found the first thing to really annoy me: the display brightness control has disappeared from the Power applet. Also the hardware keys don't work and obviously HP haven't released new drivers or anything.
