hio77:

The one place i give grace to for windows 10 activation is tech review situations simply because, their usecase is combined of consistently invalidating their activation by changing hardware.

Linus Tech Tips touched on this point in a recent YouTube video.

My home desktop is running un-activated Win 10. I'm quite certain it's been running longer than 180 days!

If i had to pay for Windows, I just wouldn't bother with it in the first place.

why do you feel its OK to steal things?  Do you shoplift as well?

If Microsoft really wanted to force people to stop using un-activated Windows 10 they would implement something like the strict WGA system that virtually crippled Windows XP and Vista after about 30 days.  I don't think it is fair to call it theft to use un-activated Win 10, when all they do is to show nags and a watermark on the home screen.

translation, I hate Windows so much, but I'm using it instead of all the free OSes I could've installed, because I won't cut my nose off to spite my face

It's not like shoplifting though is it. It's like going in to a store, looking at a product, making an identical copy of that product and taking the copy home.

And if Microsoft really cared about making money on the OS they would tighten up the activation. It's quite clear they just want everyone to use it and get them using stuff from the Microsoft store, office 365 (which I pay for) etc etc.

Not to mention all the user data Microsoft now gets from Windows 10 installs - i bet that is a thousand times for valuable to them than a $150 license.

And yea you're dead right. I can download an official ISO, install it, and everything is good to go. Why waste my time setting up a linux desktop when they make it quite freely available?! This is for a desktop PC that I use maybe 3-4 times a week for just playing around on. If I had to pay for Windows, I would just run linux, but I'm a fan of not making work for myself if I don't have to.

As for CI/CD machines, they’re doing Microsoft a service making software available on their platform. Can stop that at any time if MS desires.

Then perhaps Microsoft should treat it like something meant to be paid for? We shouldn't be expected to pay hundreds for something that automatically installs BS like Candy Crush, Bubble Witch saga, Disney Magic Kingdoms? The begging you to use Microsoft Edge? ETC

Spot on. As above, it's quite obvious Microsoft just want everyone using the OS and they know they will make it back on all the other services they push at you.

It could be part of a marketing approach to keep people from switching to alternates. Think about all the kids in school - they are used to Chrome etc and I presume that not knowing any better, they would be happy to keep using Chrome when they join the workforce. That is a big risk for M.S.

Besides, with the way Windows updates now, M.S. could quickly and easily change the consequences and start crippling the PC's of free-loaders should they choose. The softly-softly approach could be a short term thing.

waikariboy: Im still finding that downloading the windows 10 media upgrade and using it on windows 7 machine still gets Windows 10 with activation.

Interesting to know. I might have a crack at upgrading my mum's W8 machine and see what happens.

Windows is less and less important to them by the quarter, so I expect it's not a short term thing.
