Hi Guys (and Girls)

Im sorry to bother you with this subject which is probably so "Duh" for you all, but I have recently purchased my 1st laptop which comes with Windows 10. I've really been struggling as I'm used to a tablet and a really old and slow computer. This is the 2nd time in 2 months that I need to make a Video/Photo slide show. I previously used a built in program years ago with my OLD desktop, never any problems, but now it's a constant struggle to find something simple, that can take more than 1 song (as is built in now with windows 10).

I have tried with both android and computer, downloaded SO many programs to trial, and most recently what I downloaded on my computer caused the need for a restart. It seems they all offer a trial, which I will be happy to upgrade from, if I find what I need, but the last two I downloaded, say 5 minutes of video only for the trial.

Before, I just wanted an easy program that I could add photos and videos to more than one of my own songs, from my Mums favourites for Christmas! I spent hours, actally days, and finally have something that will play on my computer, but not yet on her new DVD player I bought her. Still a work in progress, that one.

But now, its my son's 21st coming up! I need to download the home video that is on a dvd so I can pick out embarrassing moments to add! So I need a program that will a) copy a DVD and b) let me cut, paste, merge, add my own photos, audio music, etc..... But it needs to be fairly simple. Am I asking for the impossible? I am happy to pay if I find the perfect program.

I have searched relentlessly online and it seems it was the inbuilt Windows 7 program that was the best? Is that right? I did one many many years ago, that was amazing (for its time), if I do say so myself. I have read SO many things, that I feel I'm now going around in circles?

Can anyone help please? I need something that can copy a home DVD (I assume it would be un-copywrited re the law etc), but can add videos and photos, more than one song (from My Music collection), to match, but easy to use.

Please don't tell me I'm looking for Rocking Horse "poo". I.e. Impossible to find!
Tania (ever hopeful)

I would use Handbrake to transcode the DVD to MP4, then you can import that into your favourite video editing software for the rest. Movie Maker is still available for Windows if you want to keep it really simple, I'm not sure what the other free options are. But might be enough to suit your needs.

Thank you so much, I will look into handbrake! Do you have any recommendations for simple video editing software please? The movie maker has changed and will only do 1 song?

Movie Maker should allow you to use more than one song. What are you seeing at your end when you try to add another song?

Maybe as a test you should add a song, then doubleclick on the audio track. Then set the end point to be really short like 5 seconds.

When you add another song, does it not appear at the end of the video?

I've just tried this myself and it seems to work fine.

Omg! You are a legend! It seems to be copying the DVD successfully. Thank you so much. This Windows 10 laptop has been doing my head in since Christmas and you solved 1 problem in literally minutes!

Now I just need real users recommendations for the simple video editing software (for dummies) and I will be one very happy lady.

Any chance you can go 2 for 2? 😄

Oh good grief, really? Well that would just be plain embarrassing! Unfortunately I can't check at the moment as Handbrake is copying my home video DVD (fingers crossed). It has another couple of hours to go, well 1 hour and 42 minutes to be exact. I don't like to disturb it. I know I should be able to, but in the past I have had skips and jumps in music files which I put down to me being impatient and trying to do other things. So better safe than sorry here. (Although that was on my old desktop).

From memory I clicked to add a music file, then, added another and it would only let me chose one. The empty circle that you fill with a click, which puts a dark circle inside? You could add many songs, but only click/choose one?

I may have got that completely wrong, but I did look online and it seemed to be a common complaint. I must confess, when I was only able to fill the "circle of choice" on one, I assumed it would not play all.

Ideally, I want a few songs and to be able to add photos & videos clips to that length, but in reality, I did choose the songs first, maybe I didn't have enough content at the time to fill more than 1 song? That would be embarrassing, but maybe a common problem online with noone giving the simple solution. Also there were a lot of people saying that the new Movie Maker is not as good as the old version, and if you can only do one song, then yes absolutely.

But now you've made me keen as, to try again! Thanks so much for the help. Oh dear, battery went flat, was on 46%. Guess I'll have to start again in Handbrake, but you've definitely helped a lot, and given food for thought too.

Thank you so much 💖

Can't wait to take another crack at it tomorrow
